Rachael Joins Hop Studios

March 16, 2008

You’ve seen a few posts on this blog from a new name.  That’s because there’s someone new at Hop Studios.

MadHatter, the Second

Rachael Ashe is our new office manager.  She’ll be wearing a lot of different hats: some project management, some bookkeeping, some site development, some graphics.  Oh, and if your bill is late, she might give you a ring.

We’re really pleased to have Rachael working with us: part time for now, and full time soon.

It is really wonderful to work in a relaxed office environment like Hop Studios. As you can see from this photo, some of us are more relaxed than others… This is Maggie lying on the laptop. She was really effective in helping me get more work done yesterday.

Redesign on the Radar

March 4, 2008

Film Radar, the source for discovering unique independent movies in Los Angles, recently came to us for a re-design. Hop Studios had worked on the original Film Radar site in 2005, modifying an existing design and adding a calendar. The site was always a house favorite and offered great potential for growth, and community interaction.

So when site owner and cinephile Karie Bible came back to us, we went a little crazy. We redesigned the entire site, added custom buttons, terrific icons, and colorful layouts. We added forums, separate article, review and interview sections, and a grand total of three blogs. A great deal of Film Radar’s content is an impressive calendar of movie events, and our redesign included it’s look and functionality. A mailing list, user database and an Open Ads system rounded out the development needs of the site. We topped it off with an automatically updating homepage, interactive drop down menus, and two custom stores.

This project also afforded Hop Studios a chance to try a new design process. We created the layouts in a more collaborative manner, and the results speak for themselves.

Karie has big plans to expand the site in the future, and we eagerly await the chance!

Launch of New Media Women Entrepreneurs

March 4, 2008

Last week in amongst Travis’ attendance of the We Media conference in Miami and a Leap Day celebration in Disneyworld with Susie, Hop Studios launched a new site for our client J-Lab. (Yes, we like to keep ourselves hoppin’.)

Our work on the New Media Women Entrepreneurs site included a fresh new design, and the creation of an online application so site visitors could apply for funding of women-led projects with the focus on New Media in the world of journalism.

NMWE is a unique initiative addressing opportunity and innovation, recruitment and retention for women in journalism by spotlighting their ingenuity and entrepreneurial abilities. Pilot projects will show what can be done. Research will tell us what more to do. And an awards program and summit will showcase women’s creative ideas. NMWE is supported by the McCormick Tribune Foundation.

You might be eligible for funding, if your project meets these requirements:

  1. Projects must be start-ups.
  2. Projects must launch (at least a live beta) within 10 months.
  3. Projects must have a plan for continuing after initial funding has ended.
  4. Projects must have journalistic value.
  5. Projects may be independent or housed within traditional media.
  6. Personal blogs or one-time documentaries will not be funded.
  7. Awardees will receive funding through a subcontract if they are an individual or affiliated with a business; and through a grant if they are affiliated with a non-profit institution.

For full details check out the NMWE site. The application deadline is midnight on May 1, 2008. You can register and apply online here.
