Big events I recall were problems with "Financial Raid", John McKay leaving (cartoon give me liberty (as in bowl) as Trojans tanked at mid-season after story came out but still got a bowl invite, Kari Granville getting first interview with Nixon after he resigned and staff trying to figure out how to copyright it, another fine year for Bob Boyd (cartoon of Hindenboyd crashing), DT sports staff beating PR society in basketball despite PR having 3 of Boyd's varsity players--two of them 6'5" starters. This was back in non-computer era and we had some of the worst manual typewriters you ever saw. We were on 4th floor of student center (I think that was name, right across from Tommy Trojan) and the elevator didn't work very well when it rained. We did have a great view out window of bonfires in front of Tommy Trojan with Marv Goux (asst. coach) giving an inspirational pep talk week of the UCLA game. One of my memorable moments was coming in one day and there was a message to call somebody at Playboy. Right! somebody is pulling a prank. Turned out to be real. They were looking for color pics of UNLV women's basketball for some reason but I didn't have any. Don't know why they didn't just call UNLV. Also, recall covering a track meet for West LA in Santa Barbara at 3pm and generally ignoring speed limit to make it to a movie studio in Burbank where we got a free screening of All the President's Men at around 7pm. I also recall shock at 10-year reunion when despite a decent turnout, we didn't hit minimum bar tab the contract called for. Add your own memory

Those college days are now a hazy blur. Of course, these days, I can barely remember what I ate for breakfast. When I was at SC, I held Daily Trojan titles such as Editorial Director -- In 1975, I wrote an editorial recommending an end to the Vietnam War, and they promptly obliged ... what power I held in those days! -- features editor and editor of So Cal Magazine (Does it still exist? It was a weekly, Monday features tabloid produced by the DT). One of the stories I wrote for So Cal was about a coed who worked as a call girl to finance her education. I had a tough time explaining my expense voucher after that interview. I remember, about in 1974 or 1975, when a mobile computer van came to campus to show us the future technology of newspapers. "Nah, it'll never replace linotype machines," I predicted boldly. That was also the year I bought stock in the Edsel Automobile Co. My last semester at SC (spring of 1976) was actually spent in Washington D.C. Then-DT editor in chief Kevin McKenna and myself both won paid internships for journalism students (the Sears Congressional Internship Program) to work on Capital Hill from January through May. I served under Congressman Albert Quie of Minnesota, a nice guy who was later (true story) nearly assassinated by Iranian student terrorists. Somehow, in my student evaluation, Quie rated me below those guys. Whatever. When I arrived in Washington, the city was closed down because of a blizzard. It was sweltering with 101-or-so percent humidity when I left. I have lived on the Central California Coast ever since. If you need any more of this drivel, you know where to find me.
