...and their memories

Mueen Batlay
Enjoyed my brief one-smester stint at DT, the high-light of which was the weekly ritual of launching paper-planes from the office window to spiral down in front of Tommy Trojan. Actually, I had so much fun at DT, that I have started a school paper at the DC Public High School I teach at. It's called "The Eagle". Add your own memory

Jeffrey Bechthold
As for the big issues and memorable people. The biggest issues -- or stories -- in sports, as I recall were the death of Hank Gathers (he'd started at USC then transferred to Loyola Marymount, then died on the court). I was sports editor at the time and probably screwed up a little by letting news take too much of the coverage. The other major story that I recall was when Rodney Peete, the tremendous USC quarterback, was stricken with measles the week of the 1988 USC-UCLA game. He was in the hospital early in the week and went on to play in the game, in which the Trojans beat Troy Aikman's Bruins. I suppose the people I remember most of all were sports people. When I started, Ara Najarian was sports editor. I thought he was a terrific columnist. Scott Wolf was also there at the time and really made an effort to kind of show me the ropes. Later on in my tenure, Chris Wiley, Dan DeNeve (who got me in trouble with some of the coaches with a column calling USC the "University of Serious Chokers"), John Tamanaha and Chuck Mazet were memorable co-workers. The other guy I remember being around all the time was the cartoonist ... his name was Dan Povenmire and he wrote a daily comic strip for many years (well over four). He even printed books of his strip and illustrated a segment of a Tommy Chong movie. The one story line of his I specifically recall is when the main characters stole a USC tram and drove it to the world's largest McDonald's in Barstow. I also recall some of the production people quite well. Ron Flores was always there at night. I think I went to a bar he owned in Eagle Rock a few times -- the Big O (for Occidental College). In those days, we still had to physically paste up the text and photos and then tape the lines onto the page, etc. You had to figure out exact photo sizes, etc., and shoot them at whatever percentage. I'd imagine it's much easier know doing all that on the computer. And Darlene Hard (a daytime production person). We always found it extremely interesting that Darlene was a many-time Grand Slam tennis champion, primarily in doubles and mixed doubles. I bet she won more than a dozen grand slam titles years before. Add your own memory

Kahlil Bendib
Guest remembrance: "I remember first seeing Bendib's work in the DT when I was a freshman in the fall of 1980. Particularly memorable was a cartoon he drew after John Lennon was murdered...it showed the three surviving Beatles walking with their heads down. Powerful stuff back then. Another cartoon I remember was one that showed people dancing in the streets in the rain saying, "The trickle-down effect! It's happening!" (or something similar). The last panel showed President Reagan standing on the roof of a skyscraper, urinating over the edge. -- Submitter: Trisha Duron (Trisha Martinez), class of 1984 Add your own memory

Jon Caplan
One time the photographers blew up James Lee's picture to a huge size, drew a Hitler mustache on it and stuck it on the ceiling in the photo area. James came in and stood right under it while he was talking to somebody. We were all holding our breath, but he didn't see it.

A few of us got drunk one night and put some stuff into the paper that we shouldn't have. We knew there would be hell to pay the next morning so Joe McDade and I agreed to come in and get chewed out as a team. Joe dutifully showed up bright and early the next morning but I had forgotten the promise that we had made, so it was just Joe vs. the Volcano. Joe -- I owe you for that.
Gordon Gary used to do great impersonations. He would call from one part of the DT office to the other and pretend he was somebody else and he would say all sorts of funny things.
Of course, it wasn't just about causing trouble. I also remember the time Jona's camera was stolen and everybody chipped in to buy her a new one. Jona -- wherever you are, I hope you still make a wish at 11:11. Add your own memory

Eric DiGiovanni
I have some copies of the DT from times gone by, but if I search only my memory, my time with the paper included a lot of internal focus. Cornelius Pings and Dr. James Zumberge (sp?) were still around and there was a huge push to revamp the General Education requirements. The Cinema School mini-campus was built, and there were still cottages where the new library stands now. The administration was just beginning the endowment process which Pres. Sample has driven to new heights recently. In football, I remember only losing seasons, with Ted Tollner at the helm. As a Trojan Marching Band member, I also probably have splotches in my memory due directly or indirectly to alcohol. :-) Hope that's of help. I do miss people like Aaron Van Curren, Joel McDade, Beth Laski and Dan Povenmire, to name but a few. Each brought a special gift to the DT, and each was certainly their own person, but each was completely serious about their task, and such devotion continues to be rare. Add your own memory

Craig Hausman
Craig says he loved "spending time with Kay Kusumoto (now married to Chris Kabel, one of Shawn Pogatchnik's Standpoint proteges - he'll be thrilled with that label), Angel Kim, John Burman, Liane Bonin, Debbie Townsend, Melissa Morrison, Dana Mitroff, Fred Levy, Robert Moran and so on, was truly a privilege. Of course, the larger cast of characters included Dan Povenmire, Jori Bieze, Leef Smith, et al. Thanks for a fun trip down memory lane!" Add your own memory

I just filled out the form to update my little blurb. I wanted to let you know I have the quote list from one of the years I was there . . . maybe 1990? I'll have to dig it out after the wedding (in 34 days), but I will get it to you. I also forgot to add Columnist to the list of positions, right after Managing Editor. I did my (usually horrifically long) column from Spain as a study abroad student. Add your own memory

Scott Mullet
Per your question, in my 3 official semesters at the DT (1988 - 1989), I was the News Editor, Asst News Editor and a Staff Writer for the city section. My experience at the DT can almost best be categorized as closer to another entertainment genre -- the soap opera. Overall, well worth it. Add your own memory

Wayne Pitts
I was tipped off by a fellow 'SC alumni that this website existed. I was a sports reporter at the DT where I covered women's volleyball and women's tennis (a dirty job but someone had to do it!) I had a great time doing it and met some great people through my work. Gary Caffey and Ara Najarian were great and supportive sports editors. Add your own memory

Steve Short
Steve was a business major, but took journalism classes and wrote for the DT. He wrote the 1988 annual articles about pending construction of an on-campus sports arena (lol). Add your own memory

Christopher Wyatt
I wrote opinion pieces. Go figure, the topics seem to have been: Israel, Iraq posing a threat (Gulf War followed), AIDS, and other such unresolved geopolitical drivel. Nothing changed, I guess. I graduated in December of 1990, so I missed any real fun in LA. I never time anything right. The feature articles were the typical profiles of celebs on campus, health issues, and would USC ever get a new stadium. It seems the Raiders and USC wanted a major overhaul for skyboxes. Why I was given the assignment, I have no clue. Maybe there was a shortage of sports reporters that week. Add your own memory

Carrie Yoshimura
I still miss those free DT movie passes. Add your own memory
