Caffey, Gary e-mail: glcaffey-at-earthlink.net    Feature Editor, Editorial Director, City Editor, Managing Editor    1985 - 1989
After dealing with the never ending Daily Trojan politics, Gary found the wisdom of entering the real political world. He has been elected twice and is still serving as a City Council Member in his hometown of Emeryville, CA, you know, the one right next to Oakland. He has served as mayor, which gave him opportunity to accept an international award from the King of Sweden on behalf of his city. Local politics doesn't pay the bills and Gary currently works as a regional training manager for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. Danielle Sanford reports remembering him.

Catalina Camia

News Editor, City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer    1983 - 1985
CC Emails direct to say she's now an editor for Gannett News Service, directing coverage of Congress and defense in the Washington, DC bureau. GNS serves Gannett's 94 newspapers, including USA Today, and other subscribers. Before that, our woman CC took a leave of absence from The Dallas Morning News. For 2001, she was a diversity fellow (is the diverse part the fact she's not a fellow?) for The Freedom Forum, the nonpartisan and international foundation based in the Washington area that runs the Newseum and other journalism programs. Says Catalina, "I wanted to take a break from daily journalism and try to make a difference in the industry on a much larger scale." She was a Washington correspondent and columnist for The Dallas Morning News, covering Congress and Texas politics. She's also just ended (2001) a two-year run as the national president of the Asian American Journalists Association and was the head of Unity. In 1999, this association of all minority journalists held a gathering that was the largest gathering of journalists, anywhere, ever, I'm told (by Elisa Ung).

Mike Carlson has landed in Jacksonville FL, where his wife, Angela, is now working as an elementary school teacher. He's pondering the FBI, the local sheriff's department and graduate school in fiction. He's returning to the U.S. after successfully (for now) deterring Kim Jong Il from visiting the McDonalds in Seoul, with a significant amount of help from the Marines of 1st Platoon, 1st Stinger Missile Battery, based in Okinawa, Japan. He finished his time as a platoon commander, and you can read an article about a live missile fire here. Previous news from his world domination tour: {{ I've also gotten married to my girlfriend, Angela Lee, whom I met while I was in Hong Kong working for the South China Morning Post. That, my friend, is the latest news. I'm now a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, trained at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. I qualified "expert" on the M16A2 service rifle and the Beretta 9 mm pistol; while the pen may be mightier than the sword, it can't really compare with a bullet. No regrets about leaving journalism for the Corps, though my most likely posting will be in public affairs.}} Mike spent much time in SE Asia, at the South China Morning Post, Where magazine and assorted other odd jobs.

Mark Carpowich sends this sigint: Mark continues his work as a Navy intelligence officer, and after enduring two summers of consistent triple-digit heat in the California desert, will be moving to the cooler climes of the Northeast. Mark writes for his base newspaper and isn't sure where he'll end up once he gets out of the military. He adds: "I am also still working on my Ph.D. at USC in political science, writing my dissertation on celebrity politics. Finally, the long commute has required me to stop gigging with Armen Keiulian's band, Greensboro Ln." I would tell you even more good update stuff, but I don't need anyone else trying to kill me.

I began graduate school immediately after finishing undergrad. I co-edited and wrote the DT history that's on the site now - with Elisa. Look no further than Washington, D.C., to find Jonathan. He admits "After a brief stint of homelessness owing to dementia, Cassidy now works for The Hill, a Washington weekly covering Congress. When not annoying Dick Gephardt with loaded questions, he writes shocking exposŽs revealing that behind the facade of careful deliberation, there are in fact political considerations affecting the creation of public policy." He was at one point doing research for Richard Reeves, and received a very nice and prominent acknowledgment (in the acknowledgments section, where else?) of Reeves book on Nixon, which is out now. He adds, much to my amusement: "Publish anything. I'm good at turning stalkers into friends." Credit: Elisa Ung.

He's still sad that his former office at the "Daily Trojan" disappeared when they remodeled a few years ago. Keith graduated in Dec. 1997 and got himself a car for his 2004 birthday.

Cavallo, Janet e-mail: janetcavallo-at-hotmail.com    Photographer, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer    1990 - 1992
Janet moved to Washington, DC, in Jan. 1998 after her two-year+ stint with Peace Corps Uzbekistan, where she was an English teacher. She runs a halfway house/bed and breakfast for RPCVs (DT alumni are also welcome). In her spare time she works as an editor for the Bureau of National Affairs. But what about before Peace Corps? After the DT she spent a year in London and Dublin and then returned to the East Coast (New York) and hung around Manhattan before moving upstate to write features for a paper in South Armpit. Since moving to DC, besides reliving her PC experience as often as she can corner anyone polite enough to listen, she's bicycled the C&O Canal and ran the AIDS Marathon. This year she's training for her second marathon, teaching English at a community center, and planning to go on a safari this summer -- so anyone who's been to Botswana, feel free to pass along stories and tips!

Arwen's voices tell her that Annette may have been friends with Sean Polay, but that may have ended somehow, Adams reports. No idea what became of her (Annette, not Arwen). Last AA heard, she (damn is this entry confusing!) was doing PR for a window installer or something around the La Canada area; but that was around 93...

Edith had interned there the previous summer, left, then went back there in January 2002. Not sure if she's still there, but that's the last Jenn heard about her. Jenn says she's been meaning to see her, but haven't had time.

Chandler, Carmen Ramos e-mail: carmen.chandler-at-csun.edu Web page: http://www.csun.edu/    Staff Writer, Assistant City Editor, Investigations Editor    1981 - 1985   Personal recollections
Carmen attended USC from 1981 to 1985. After leaving the university, she worked the Arizona Daily Star for nearly four years. She came back to California to work at the Daily News of Los Angeles, where she helped organize the Newspaper Guild, and served as unit chair and president of the Local. In 1994, she left the Daily News, suffering from bilateral carpal tunnel, to take the job of Director of News and Information at Cal State Northridge. Says Chandler, "One of the advantages of leaving newspapers is that I am allowed to get involved on community work. I am currently vice president of the California Association of Human Relations Organizations, a statewide group committed to the promotion of human rights and human relations throughout the state. I also serve on the board of the Latin American Civic Association. I am married and have two little girls, Analisa, 3, and Marisela, 1." Thanks, Mark, for the initial tip.

After Janet graduated USC in '02, she was totally dismayed at the lack of journalism and journalism-related job opportunities in Los Angeles. So, after many, many months of temping, and a boring stint at a healthcare company, she bought a one-way plane ticket (no joke!) in December of 2003 to Europe -- Germany, to be exact -- where she now works for the Civilian Human Resources Agency at Headquarters for the Department of the Army, Europe. So far, she has used her free time to tour neighboring countries such as Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, and learn European languages, namely French and German. Thus her adventure has begun.

Justin has freelanced for the Los Angeles Times and interned at the Orange County Register -- film reviews, I think. Justin also helped to update the Daily Trojan Alumni site (yes, this one) adding over 1,000 people by pouring over old staff lists. Fight on, Justin!

   Staff Writer    1986? - 1989?
Julie Chen, once the host of Big Brother and the CBS Morning News, wrote for the Daily Trojan once upon a time ..... back in the late 80s or early 90s. Her CBS bio notes that she is a graduate of USC, with degrees in broadcast journalism and English, and Mike Utley vaguely remembers her from at least one of the five semesters he was at the DT. Thanks for the memories, Mutley. Her CBS bio says: "Julie Chen is news anchor for The Early Show, and anchors the CBS Morning News. Chen began filling in as news anchor for the CBS Morning News and This Morning in June 1999. Before that, she was a reporter and anchor for WCBS-TV, the CBS station in New York (1997-99). She also was a reporter for WDTN-TV Dayton (1995-97). Chen was a producer for ABC NewsOne, that network's affiliate news service (1991-95). She started out as a production associate in ABC News' Los Angeles bureau (1990-91). [Chen is] a native of New York City." She recently delivered foreign reports for the Early Show from Kuwait and Qatar during the war in Iraq. I'm going to stay clear of the whole Moonves thing here.

Childers, David "Dave" e-mail: davechilders-at-attbi.com Web page: http://www.sierragateway.com/columnists/childers/    Almost Sports Editor, Staff Writer, Assistant Sports Editor    1993 - 1994
Dave Childers is in year number four of his teaching career, clinging to his tenure and trying to stay in the good graces of the administration. He is currently teaching 7th grade English and History, and just this year he was asked to teach a first-time elective, "Broadcast Journalism." He oversees a crew of 22 7th and 8th graders who produce a daily, live television broadcast on the school's closed circuit television system as well as various other projects around campus. He also coaches boys basketball and baseball and tennis, when no one else more qualified is available. As if that isn't enough to keep him busy, one year ago on November 8, 2001, Dave and his wife Dora welcomed Lauren Brittany Childers into the world. Careful readers will note that little Lauren and one Sean Nathan Kearns of Daily Trojan infamy share the same birthday, which may or may not be a sign of an impending apocalypse. Dave still scratches his writing itch by submitting columns on a fairly regular basis to a local weekly owned and operated by McClatchy - Sierra Gateway Living. His slice of the paper's web page can be found at http://www.sierragateway.com/columnists/childers/ . Dave is proud to report that he accompanied Sean Kearns and several others to the recent whipping of UCLA at the Rose Bowl. There are few things in life that Dave enjoys more than USC victories and UCLA losses, and when they come packaged together it just doesn't get much better than that. He also is working with a teaching friend on a new website http://home.comcast.net/~collegehoops/ . He got married in August of 1995 and graduated from Fresno State with a degree in Liberal Studies in 1998.

Cholo-Tipton, Ana e-mail: anaperiodista-at-aol.com,acholo-at-tribune.com    Photographer    1996 - 1997
Ana interned at the Whittier Daily News during Christmas Break 1996, also her first year at J-school. She was offered a position as a staff reporter at that newspaper several months later in May of 1997 during her junior year of college after a reporter got fired for getting drunk and landing in jail while reporting a story. After covering a workplace shooting, she and another reporter received an award for spot news from the Los Angeles Press Club. Ana graduated with a dual degree in print journalism and history in June 1998 and was hired by the Press-Telegram in Long Beach the same month. After working the Wednesday through Sunday shift at the P-T, she quit in February 1999 to pursue another love -- acting and comedy. But journalism was in her blood so in August of 1999, after months of waitressing and getting nowhere quickly, she went to work for the Los Angeles Times at the Orange County edition. There, she and another reporter received an honorable mention from the Orange County Press Club for a story on pedestrian deaths in Santa Ana. A year later, she was accepted into METPRO, the Minority Editorial Training Program at the LA Times. In August 2001, she was sent to Chicago with her two children to work for the Chicago Tribune. Ironically, her first day of work was on Sept 11, 2001. She is currently an education reporter at the Tribune covering Chicago Public Schools. She lives in the city with her children and Rottweiler dog named Cookie.

Kris now almost never takes pictures other than on his digital point and shoot. Still living in Culver City he works now as a consultant in the advertising industry. Kris komments: "Since graduating in 1993 I have been working in media in the advertising industry. First for DMB&B (now Mediavest) then Chiat/Day (Now OMD) then J. Walter Thompson (now Mindshare) are you seeing the pattern? I went up to SF looking for my Dotcom gold in 1998 and joined Xeno as an owner but after two years and the Dotcom bust, began to consult. I returned to LA 1 week after September 11th 2001. I was still consulting and having to fly all the time. Travel became a burden to say the least. At that point I decided to work at Paramount studio. Slaving there for a year and a half, I again was drawn to the freedom on the independent consultanting world. How many alumni can say that they have spent over a billion dollars in the past 10 years? Now I am still picking up a new business project or two for friends, but I am concentrating on my new venture of selling and producing in-school media with Planet Report."

I don't know how long Steve has been at the Journal, but Jenn randomly ran into him at a party and she reports he definitely remembers Ron and his football betting, and he definitely remembers Mona. Since graduating in 1988, Church had worked at a weekly paper in Gardena, CA, a small daily in Redlands, CA, the Orange County Register's weekly editions and in San Bernardino CA, before Gannett sold that 95,000-daily. In that time he has covered everything from cops and city hall, to the environment and federal courts.
