Galante, Mary Ann
Managing Editor, City Editor, SoCal Editor, News Editor, Features Editor, And other stuff no one remembers
1969 - 1973
Last Jackie Lapin heard, she was practicing law. In fact, Galante has been at the Riverside Public Defender's Office since 1990, where she supervises felony cases and does some trials, mostly death penalty cases and homicides. (She'll be on an episode of Cold Case Files sometime this winter for a case she tried this summer involving a serial child killer/molester.) Mary Ann was a legal journalist in LA for 10 years, as managing editor of the LA Daily Journal then LA bureau chief for the National Law Journal. She ended up as a financial writer for the LA Times before joining the Public Defender in 1990. Never married and no kids -- but she was once engaged to Dodi Fayed and is waiting for Donald Trump on the rebound. (And she's not "Marianne" -- I had it wrong here for years!)

Purports Paul: "I was laid off from my job at sa360.com in Oct. 2001 a week before my birthday, got three months severance, was hired back by sa360 in January (great timing) and then the company went out of business in May right before my wedding anniversary. I got another three months severance out of it and found a job as the Web manager at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Seguin is not a bad town, but the commute from San Antonio is killing my -- ahem -- marital fun and my car. Hey at least something's gettings some miles on it!" After graduating from USC, Paul was a reporter in the Houston area in a small city called Baytown. Baytown had "a smelly refinery [and looked] like a post apocalyptic wasteland -- but the people are nice." So nice, in fact, that's where he met his wife Mary Anna.

Susannah "Susie" Gardner

Managing Editor, Editorial Director, Assistant Editorial Director, City Editor, Assignment Editor, Assistant City Editor, Columnist (The Morning After), Staff Writer
1992 - 1995
Latest update: Susie has asked me to add that she's Queen of the World, she can talk with animals, she has become a magnet for $100 bills, and her hair is curly now. If you get the idea that I don't fact check these very well, you're right! Susie was born in Germany, but spent no time dawdling and quickly grew up in D.C, California, Virginia, Alabama, Germany again, Hawaii and finally at USC. She worked at the Los Angeles Times as an electronic editor, then as the multimedia director. She captured Travis Smith with her charming smile, and the two of them fled to Paris (c.f. Henry Miller's magnum opus) for a year of French culture. She is currently living in a smashingly well decorated house in Pasadena, and has just started her own small business: Hop Studios. If you need a Web site, some Internet consulting, audio, video, you name it, she's your go-to-girl. She's still teaching multimedia journalism at none other than USC, where she had been "research director and technical director, online program, Annenberg School, USC."

Tall, tall Julie Gargan returned to Moreno Valley to partake of the Julie Gargan Personal Lottery Service (basically, mooching off her parents). She took a couple more classes in graphic design and computer animation. Then she started at a web design company, and went from Zentropy to Spike to Kickmedia (which was known as Carbon 14). And she's living in a guest house in Atwater Village. And she says she's doing design and flash now. Ten-four.

Artist, Assistant Editorial Director, Staff Writer
1986 - 1988 Personal recollections
Gordon Gary, now Gordon Tokumatsu, is now at KNBC-TV. Gordon started his professional (i.e. paid) career at KNX NewsRadio while still a student. First on-air job: KESQ, Palm Springs, followed by KLAS in Vegas, KCRA, Sacramento. Came to L.A. in 1993 ... been here ever since at NBC-4. "It's been a grand tour," he reports. By the way: "Tokumatsu" (his on-air handle at NBC) comes from his mother's side of the family. Causes less confusion than "Gary" as a surname.

Gaven, Matthew "Matt"
Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer
1986? - 1986?
Matt currently works as an independent television producer, when he's not "wearing an orange caltrans jumpsuit on the side of the 101 Freeway." He has managed to achieve reasonable sucess since the glory days of USC. From game shows to reality shows, hidden camera to court and talk shows, it's been "a wild ride in a wacky business." After a brief stint with NBC Sports, he worked with a company called Lorimar-Telepictures as a program developer and producer and was responsible for the development and production of a children's gameshow called Fun House, in addition to some 8 to 10 pilots in various genres. The mid-90's sent him into the world of reality television as a writer and producer for RealTV. After that I took a management job as supervising producer of Moral Court with Larry Elder for Warner Brothers, followed by Card Sharks for Fremantle Syndication. His latest venture is the launch of his own production company as a tax shelter, said company having just finished a pilot for the television version of SCRABBLE for the Game Show Network.

CAPS is the country's first off-site airport baggage check-in and passenger ticketing service, based in Las Vegas, Nev. Gibbons, Alan
Cheif Copy Editor (sic)
1987 - 1991
It's a joke, don'tcha get it, a joke! Anyway, Alan was my introduction into the ways of the Daily Trojan. She could read a story in 3 minutes flat, write a headline in another 20 seconds, proof pages faster than Ron could photocopy them, and be done in time to listen to two hours of Dan Povenmire trying in vain to come up with a "Life Is a Fish" comic strip that didn't involve scatological references. Arwen Adams says Alan left her job at the Breeze to go join the Orange County Register Sports desk.... As far as another rumor that Alan "followed her man to Asia," I can neither confirm nor deny that at this time.

1984 - 1986
Dana decants: "I spent almost 20 years in journalism, including my time at the DT and Rolling Stone during college. Went on to work as a copy editor and designer at the Orange County Register and ended up marrying Frank Farrar, a colleague there. I quit on my honeymoon to go to the Times, and spent 13 happy years there. I really enjoyed the hard news excitement of the Northridge earthquake, the riots and the OJ years and was honored to share in three staff Pulitzers. I also wrote a weekly "Dining With Dana" restaurant review colunmn for the San Gabriel Valley section of the Times. After the second daughter was born, I quit and ended up running my own PR firm from home. My husband left the Times for a brief sojourn in the corporate world, but is happy to be back at the Calendar section doing writing and editing."

Glaser, since gradutaion, has drifted into the glamourous world of professional wrestling. Since being taken under the sweaty wing of Vince McMahon, Glaser, or "The G-Laser" as he's now known, has made quite a name for himself over the past few years. Battling the infamous El Caliente Pupusa twice, once to a draw and once to victory in a feared "Bowling Alley Match", Glaser has risen in the ranks to be one of professional wrestling's hottest up-and-comers. Look for Glaser this summer in the newest Wrestlemania, where he and the The Fashion Fascist will take on the Dr. Bjorn Bonecrusher and The Human Fondue Pot in a tag-team match, celebrity refereed by The Iron Yuppie. Also, look for the new G-Laser action figure out this fall from Bandai, with cool lefty-beating action and removable self-esteem. Great for Hanukah!

Goo, Sara
Staff Writer
1995 - 1995
Sara Kehaulani Goo was a rising star at the DT when she did a "reverse-Brenda" (think 90210) and transferred to the University of Minnesota. She's had internships at the Orange County Register, Cape Cod Times and St. Paul Pioneer Press. April reported she was scoping out the job market for after graduation. And then this came in from Sara... "What's written about me is correct: I am now a business reporter at The Washington Post but somehow got transfered to cover airport security post 9/11. I'm living in DC so would be happy to see people when they pass through. Very happy, very single. I've been moving around a lot (as we all have) and DC is finally a place I'd like to stay and hang out for a while. The Post is great. A quick synopsis for anyone who cares: After leaving LA in 95, I moved to Minneapolis and graduated from U of Minn in 98. interned at The Wall Street Journal in Detroit buro in 98 summer, then hired to work for their New England section out of Boston that fall. WSJ axed all of those regional sections in Nov. 2000. I then was hired by The Washington Post and moved to DC in 2001.". Matt O'Gara confirms it: "I'll tell you that I live directly across the street from Sara Goo in D.C.; she worked for the WSJ in Detroit, then the WSJ in Boston, now she's a business reporter at the Washington Post."

Graham, Susan
Copy Editor, Assignment Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer
1991 - 1992
Every once in a while, someone writes such a good self description, you're force to run it just as it arrives: "I live in northern Vermont, near Jay Peak Resort and Canada. I became engaged in July, and moved in with my fiance, Scott Staples, in September. [Editor's Note: They were married Sept. 29, and Bernadette Garcia was the maid of honor.] I am an "instant mom," since he has custody of his three kids: a daughter, 18, and two sons, 15 and 12. So now the word is out: Yes, I am a saint! Just kidding, the kids and I really get along great. I am now the western editor of Ski America & Canada, a guidebook to winter resorts, and senior Web editor of our online site, www.resortspace.com (we've changed our name from worldrec.com). Site was named "Best of the Web" skiing site by Forbes! We also provide ski content to Expedia and Lycos, so I work with their ski editors to keep information updated and accurate. Naturally, this job requires a lot of travel, but someone has to ski all that terrain, eat all that wonderful food, and check out the nearby lodging. I couldn't resist volunteering, it's the only way I could think of to get paid for being a ski bum. Life is truly fun! Other jobs I've held since leaving USC: PR and marketing consultant for the outdoor lifestyle/adventure sports industry, PR coordinator at Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont, assistant editor at the now-defunct Snow Country and Snow Country Business magazines, assistant news editor at the Torrington (CT) Register Citizen, and city editor at South County News/The Orange County (CA) Register." Susan adds: "You can keep my address information as is, since my 'home office' didn't move with me--no place to put it! I now have to commute to my home office. What's wrong with that picture?!!"

Grant, Jason S.
Staff Writer
1991? - 1997?
Nothing currently known - found on an old staff list. But I hope this isn't the same person at the DT for 7 years, 'cause that'd be a real record. There was one listing for Jason Grant and another for Jason S. Grant. The Jason S. Grant I remember from 1992 was a tireless, enthusiastic, but ultimately chaos-enducing entity in the newsroom.

Gray, Brandon
Editorial Columnist
1995 - 1995
If you're in the entertainment industry, chances are you've heard of a little site called boxofficemojo.com. Brandon's toned down his Napoleonesque ire (a bit) and offers his readers scarily accurate box office predictions. From his "About Us" Page: Box office analyst Brandon Gray founded the site on August 7, 1998 with just a couple of charts, including the Box Office Forecast. Thanks largely to word-of-mouth, Box Office Mojo has grown into the #1 box office site on the Internet, currently averaging over 500,000 unique visitors per month. Mr. Gray has been regularly quoted in such publications and sites as USA Today, Forbes, The Drudge Report, Bloomberg, E! Online and many more. He has been a talking head on CNN and Access Hollywood. Assistant City Editor
1994 - 1994
Last time we heard from this G man, he announced he was "still the proud owner of his very own pica pole," and his therapist was very relieved. Other than that, though, Matt was "practically invisible" at the DT and gone before anyone ever even knew his name -- a notion borne out by the fact that he went nearly three months (out of four) before he had his own login to the ATEX system. Matt was working in 1998 as Online Producer for the Washington Post's online thing, after leaving Politics Now when it shut down rather suddenly. Said Matt: "I'm sitting about 15 feet away from where I used to work. I mention this only because knowing where to go for lunch is a very important facet of any job, and I know this neighborhood like the back of my hand."
