Ha'Eri, Bobak e-mail: BobakUSC-at-yahoo.com    Staff Writer    2000 - 2000   Personal recollections
During his final year at 'SC (and his stint writing for the Daily Trojan), Bobak took advantage of opporunities with the Trojan Democrats to get an internship at the Democratic National Convention where he interned in the Media Arrangements and Operations (lovingly called MAO). Hired on to the DNC staff after graduation, Bobak's work involved designing the Media Village for broadcasters outside the Staples Center as well as planning the layout for print media inside the LA Convention Center. As the DNC drew to a close, Bobak, through his boss at the DNC, got a job on the Gore/Lieberman Advance Team during the final 4 months of the 2000 Election (no, he did not do any trips in Florida, but he did do New Mexico, which Gore won by just over 500 votes). While on advance, Bobak built motorcades, crowds, sites, and handles the occassional press arrangement. After the Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore (2000), he decided it would be a wise idea to enter law school himself. He now attends the University of Minnesota Law School where he is the student body President and the past editor-in-chief of the "Bar Review Weekly", a humorous newsletter that gave him the opportunity to continue the light-hearted ramblings he produced for the Daily Trojan.

Annette's now assistant business editor for the Los Angeles Times. She's also Alumni #200, and therefore cause for much celebration. It took 2.5 years to get 200 alumni, FYI. Annette somehow survived the DT experience and went on to work at the L.A. Herald Examiner, United Press International and then the Los Angeles Times. She also co-edited a book of travel literature, Travelers' Tales Brazil, which was published in 1997, and has another in the works.

April Haitsuka

City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Columnist (American Haiku), Staff Writer    1993 - 1997   Personal recollections
April's description is tight and concise. " I am teaching world history and math at Dale Junior High in Anaheim ... which is where I happened to go to school, a small light that shines in my memories of the otherwise dreadful 1980s. I'm enjoying myself as much as I can in my first year as a teacher." She'd been in the teacher credential program at Cal State Fullerton, pursuing a secondary education credential in social studies. She's also got a good beau: Kris.

Hamm, Jennifer "Jen" e-mail: jeninprague-at-hotmail.com Web page: http://www.JenniferHamm.com/
Victoria Manley and Jen Hamm

Editor, Managing Editor, Assignment Editor, Features Editor, Staff Writer    1995 - 1997   Personal recollections
After six months and a small fortune of trying and failing to get a work visa from the Dutch government, Jen is now freelance writing. Read: Her tolerant boyfriend Simon pays the rent. The two landed a huge and cheap flat just outside Utrecht, the most beautiful city in the Netherlands. (See http://www.studenttraveler.com/mag/03-04/bunk.php for details.) Since leaving Prague in Feb. 2003, she drinks less beer and studies languages more. A few DT alums have appeared for visits, namely Robin Rauzi on the last leg of her European tour as well as Laura Lanchester. She has great credentials, having just worked at The Prague Post, an English language weekly. Before going walkabout, Jen was a staff writer for the Los Angeles Daily News, where she covered Burbank and Glendale. Until October 1999, she worked for the Los Angeles Times, Ventura County Edition. Jen shared an apartment with Laura Lanchester in Hollywood, back in the day.

Hancock, Branden    Photography Editor, Photographer    1995 - 1997   Personal recollections
Sadly, Branden Hancock (aka Ghent) died October 26, 2003 of a motorcycle accident. Many people have written to inform this site; he must have had a wide circle of friends, and been well-liked. I've been told any comments or well wishes may be sent to memorial@23.org. This quote was taken from a newspaper article about the accident: Also identified Monday was Branden Hancock, 26, of Bellflower, who died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday after his motorcycle went over an embankment on Highway 33, north of Sespe Creek, authorities said. And this came from an Defcon online forum posting, where he was a core staff member: At approximately 4 pm PST Sunday the 26th of October 2003 on the way back down to Los Angeles from Santa Barbara and in the company of two good friends, Branden entered into a turn on a local highway and drifted into the dirt turn off at the side of the road. He attempted to break and bank back onto the road but was unable to bleed off enough speed to prevent a loss of control that ended with the bike and himself going off the road and over the embankment. He fell twenty feet and landed face down on several large bolders. When Hollywood and War God reached him he was not breathing and had no pulse. CPR was performed for 25 minutes by EMS personnel. At that point EMS declared him dead at the scene. At this time the actual cause of death is not known but it is believed based on the trauma observed that death was instant and that he did not suffer. He is survived by his mother and younger sister. Branden Hancock was also survived by his father.

I used to list Mahshid as just Mahshid H. Then she wrote to say: "I've finally clicked on to the DT alum page and decided that I deserve at least a last name...... I'm Mahshid Hariri. Was an assistant editorial director 1992-1993. Worked with Susannah, your (Travis Smith's) lovely wife, who I see walking around the A-school, and was occasionally terrorized by George Stankow. Nice to hear he is happily married. [Ed note: yes, it is.] After SC I went to law school at UCLA, worked as a lawyer, then returned to USC for Master's in Print Journalism. Will finish up in August 2002 and hopefully lead a nice life as an editor somewhere."

Heimlich, Lisa e-mail: trojanlisa-at-yahoo.com Web page: http://www.usc.edu/dept/pubrel/trojan_family/winter02/class_notes.html    Managing Editor, Assistant City Editor, Assistant News Editor, Summer Trojan Editor, Diversions Editor    1991 - 1994
Hooray! Lisa finally finished her master's degree from the USC Rossier School of Education on 5/16/03. She ran into Mona and relived the old days while taking her family up to the 4th floor to view the festivities from the DT digs. The info. in the Trojan Family Magazine (below) is correct, and she was an articles editor for the journal of the California Association for the Gifted for 3 years. Our previous Lisa sighting was via Vickie Manley at Vickie's newspaper earlier in 2003. Lisa apparently had read an article in The Herald's online edition that sparked her interest. Anyway, she's living in SoCal, is married, and "some other great stuff," says Vic, who always did know how to keep me guessing. So I did some (gasp!) research and found out from our own alumni magazine that Lisa probably was involved with the California Association for the Gifted in the 90s, and that "Lisa (Heimlich) Regan was promoted to reading specialist for the Los Angeles Unified School District, developing intervention strategies for elementary and middle school students. She is currently pursuing her master's degree at the USC Rossier School of Education." That Alumni magazine does come in handy from time to time.

Herman, Cleve Web page: http://www.kfwb.com/kfwb30.html    Editor    1936? - 1940?
Resigned as editor because of ill health. Jackie Lapin reports that he died, says he worked KFWB, one of the news radio stations in L.A., for many years, and passed away probably in 1995. Check out the KFWB history web site, full of interesting stuff.

Hernandez, Dave    Staff Writer    1990? - 1993
Dave took the more units in one semester than anyone I've ever known. The fact that I met him at the DT, where he was working during that crazy semester, is even more impressive. I know I'm getting lazy by not rewriting what's sent me, but it's easier to let you read the original e-mail:
"Graduated in 1993, moved back to New York and worked for a literary agency, which was awful, but my parents told me that 'that's what work is really about' and I had nothing to compare it to, so I stuck around for about two years until I just got so sick of it that I bought a plane ticket for Frankfurt, Germany and quit my job just so that I wouldn't waste the ticket. Went to Paris and basically hung out for a while, moved back to New York in 1995, and was offered a job in Seattle working with an online service that was affiliated with the Seattle Times. Lived in Seattle for a little over a year until I was offered a job at John Wiley & Sons, a large New York-based publishing company, working in their New Media Department. So, moved back to New York for the job, been at Wiley a little over two years where I'm responsible for long-term strategic development of our online publishing program. I'm also just about finished with my masters in computer science degree at NYU, and the plan was to go on to B-school, but I have to admit I'm feeling a little restless lately and feel like I'm on the verge of buying a ticket to Frankfurt again." a later e-mail amends the first thusly: "As for me, I joined and promptly (well, ten months later) quit PricewaterhouseCoopers and am now happily doing consulting work on my own for intranet systems."

Herold, Ann e-mail: ann.herold-at-latimes.com    Faculty Adviser    1991 - 1994
Was working for the Los Angeles Times Magazine at last check. Was the advisor to the Daily Trojan for several years. Married a fellow (that would probably be Mr. Connors) who worked at Times. Jim Carr says he doesn't recall her working on DT when he was there. Says Carr: "Don't know her exact years as student but I know she was a transfer from Santa Barbara CC where she was on school paper. (They were in same league West LA was in and I saw paper when I traveled there.)"

Hess, Steve e-mail: hess-at-legalimages.com Web page: http://www.legalimages.com/    who can remember . . .    1973 - 1976
Steve paints a picture: "After leaving USC in '76, I got into TV journalism immediately and spent the next 15 years working my way through the profession. I worked in Kansas City, San Francisco and Seattle. I ended up as a producer on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather working in NYC. Prior to coming to N.Y., I had a William Benton Fellowship in Broadcast Journalism at the Univ. of Chicago. Most excellent. They basically paid your TV salary and you got to study whatever you wanted. I wish that had never ended. About 10 years ago I started a business called LegalImages that, essentially, produces trials. We conceptualize the case presentation with the attorneys and then create the graphics, animation, etc. to tell the story in court. It's been rewarding and fun . . . how can you beat that? I saw that Kevin McKenna has a four year old . . . mine are 17 and 19, yikes. I live north of NYC in a little village on the Hudson River called Irvington and would love to hear from fellow DTers . . . .
