Greg Hill moved from the WSJ to become the features editor of E-Company, which bought and became Business 2.0. Hill, Mary

1982 - 1984
I open this meeting of DT Anonymous by introducing Mary. (Hi Mary!) Mary says: "My name is Mary. I worked for the Daily Trojan from 1982 to 1984. My major was print journalism. I could tell you stories!!! Anyway, I graduated from USC in 1986. From there I worked at various newspapers throughout the country, including the Chicago Tribune. In 1992 I earned my masters degree in journalism at Ohio State University. Presently, I am a Ph.D. student in mass communication at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I expect to be Dr. Hill by the end of the year. I plan to enter the professor ranks real soon!" Another sad story of a life ruled by journalism.

Himmelberg, Michele
Sports Editor, Staff writer, Assistant Sports Editor
1978 - 1979 Personal recollections
Michele covered sports from '79 to 1995, one of the first women to cover pro football and a pioneer in gaining equal access for women to locker rooms. She co-founded the Association for Women in Sports Media, a national networking and support group that also awards scholarships to aspiring sports journalists. Michele now is a business writer for the Orange County Register. Married name is Michele Farmer. Locker room battles included a lawsuit against the San Francisco 49ers in 1981, which McClatchy Newspapers won, and a threatened suit agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in '79. And this: "In 1979 Michelle Himmelberg covered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League for the Fort Myers News Press. (Watson-Rouslin, 23.) Team management decided to keep all reporters out of the locker room rather than admit Himmelberg. Instead, they built a wall to separate the dressing area from the interview area. It was dubbed "the Himmelberg Wall." The wall was not popular with Himmelberg's journalist colleagues, who blamed her, rather than the Bucs management, for their exclusion from the locker room."

Hochgesang, Ryan
Staff Writer, Sports Editor
1995? - 1998 Personal recollections
Nothing currently known. (Nick Divito sent me a staff list.) But I found his name on ~shant's web site, along with this quote: The Daily Trojan Senior Editors retreat at Lake Gregory, CA. Highlights included: setting off loud, mysterious alarms; eating grilled cheese; playing "Mafia;" attempting to light a fire log (with some success!); eating s'mores (with even less success -- Mark!); the infamous Pillow Fight; and "Woody's Motel" on the town's main drag. And who could possibly forget the "Rim Lanes" Bowling Complex, truly a monument to. . . well, funk. From left to right is Diversions editor Jin Whang (also with Colin D. Smith), City editor Toni Barber, Managing editor Elisa Ung, Editor-in-Chief Kamron Barron, Viewpoint editor Mark Carpowich, co-Assignment editor (with me) Dave Khalaf, Copy editor Claire Luna (who's cool because she likes ERASURE!), Art director Griffin Maghari, and Sports editor Ed de la Fuente (also with Ryan Hochgesang). Missing is Photo editor Jessica "Jecca" Namakkal, one of my very best friends in the world.

Hoelle, John
Cartoonist (Yeah, Whatever)
1993 - 1997 Personal recollections
From John's speech bubble: "Well as a lonely cartoonist, I never spent that much quality time in the ole office, but I was happy to see names I recognized here. If anyone is in LA, come see my band play: info at [the Web link above]. After school I started editing for film and television. My credits range from short narratives to feature documentaries about the Sudanese civil war and a drag queen&gay porn director to network news stories and cable series like "Behind Closed Doors with Joan Lunden," "Discovery Health" and "Travel Channel Secrets." I am an (unproduced) screenwriter/director as well. I don't keep in touch with any other DT alumni that I can think of, except for the fact that I married Jessica Redford (LAS, '97), a rare contributor/reviewer for the DT arts section, soon after graduating in 1997. She and I live in Santa Monica, but are planning to relocate to New Zealand for a year or so in April, where we may well be tending sheep on organic farms.

Horne, Roger
Sports Editor
1992 - 1995
Roger Horne is now an official Dad. He and wife Sharon are the proud parents of Brandon Christpher Horne, born Sept. 1. He's predicting the tyke'll be on the U.S. 2030 World Cup soccer team. Roger is currently the Sports Information Director at California Baptist University in Riverside -- hired in March 2003. He tried something other than sports PR from 2001-03: teaching sixth grade. "That turned out to not be my thing," he says. He's still a statistician for the L.A. Avengers. Also, he got married in September 2001 (to Sharon).
2001: Jenn Javier says: "Roger Horne left the USC Sports Information office in late 1999 to pursue a job with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. He got a little burnt out on that, returned to L.A., got engaged and now wants to be a teacher. Paul Goldberg told me about him getting engaged and said Roger wants to teach third, fourth or fifth graders. I saw Roger at Homecoming in the Coliseum press box with his fiancee."
1998: Roger Horne is back from Ohio State getting a master's in Sports management. He now serves as one forth of all full-time Assistant Sports Information Directors at USC, rising form the ranks of Sports Information Graduate Assistant at USC. Roger works with the baseball and men's water polo teams, and maintains the Athletic Department web site. For information on other alumni in orbit around the USC Sports department, check out John Tamanaha and Paul Goldberg.
