Jackson, Corey
Artist, Art Director
1999 - 2001
Apparently Corey was never working in Germany, (oops, bad reporting), but he was working at Ludicorp in Vancouver, BC after graduating from 'SC. Corey has since crossed over to the darkside and is currently studying for his MFA in animation in Bruin Country (UCLA). Check out his Web site for some of his amazing art pieces. Please disregard previous hallucinogen-induced reports from Alex Nguyen about some fallacious German sojourn Corey had.

Jares, Joe
Sports Editor, Fake Daily Bruin Co-Creator, Managing Editor, Columnist (SCatterings)
1955 - 1959 Personal recollections
Joe takes a special place not just in DT but also in USC fame. 'Twas he who put out the first phony four-page Daily Bruin and had it distributed by the Trojan Knights throughout the Westwood campus -- with the aid of fellow DT alumnus Garry Short and varsity diver/senator/TV major Larry Lichty (now a professor at Northwestern). He has also taught the USC sportswriting class for 14 semesters and is a veteran Sports Illustrated writer. Jares just retired from the LA Daily News after nearly 20 years, I believe. He's also written several books; Amazon admits to "A Marmac Guide to Los Angeles," "Whatever Happened to Gorgeous George" and "Basketball, the American game," and Joe brought my attention to "Conquest: A Calvacade of USC Football" (with John Robinson), "Clyde" (with pro basketball player Walt Frazier) and "The Athlete's Body" (with Ken Sprague). He was once a cityside reporter at the Los Angeles Times.

Javier, Jenn
Sports Editor, Assistant Sports Editor, Staff Writer
1998 - 2000
Jenn was the second known female sports editor. I'm not trumpeting just that she's a known female, it's the rank + gender that's important here. Also important, she's a DT alumni marrier -- her and Ed de la Fuente are getting married in November, 2004. Jen reported in 2003, "I will finally get out of the bowels of USC this December" -- and if I may note, that's a nasty metaphor -- "graduating a semester early. After that, it's off to The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware in late January for a three-month sports internship I got through the Chips Quinn program. Tropical girl in lots of snow -- should be interesting, since I've never been in snow longer than a week and have never had to drive in it. I will quit my part-time job at the Register in mid-December, hibernate in Arizona for a while and then brave the snow. After that, who knows?" Turns out, the internship has become something even longer - she is now copy-editing, having intermediately covered University of Delaware women's basketball and just about anything else they want her to do, including fun things like NASCAR (that's a joke, by the way). Jen was once news assistant at the Orange County Register sports desk.

Johnson, Aric
Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer
1989? - 1992? Personal recollections
Ever on the move, Aric is now working as an assistant business editor for The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He was a business editor at The Fresno Bee before leaving for the even hotter city. The now-married Aric left Reno (where he was a business reporter) and went to work for the Fresno Bee as assistant metro editor (different title, same basic job, says Aric) -- bureau chief for the South Valley edition. Once called a "living spelling mistake," I found out about Aric's Reno whereabouts through a guy sitting next to a friend of a friend while I was at a party of a friend of my wife's. Damn small world, eh? Note: Damn small world, part II. April Haitsuka ran into Aric when he was interviewing for Gannett at a journalism school job conference.

Photographer
1981? - 1982?
Randy Johnson, pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks who recently signed a splendiferous contract, was a photographer for the DT in the early 1980s. Nicknamed "The Big Unit," he was named, along with teammate Curt Schilling, "Man of the Year" by Sports Illustrated. Randy recently was interviewed by the Daily Trojan and looked back on his time as photographer at the DT with fond memories. He was a sophomore in 1982 when Casey Wian was the editor. In the Fall 1982 Blood Bowl, Wian was quarterback and Johnson was receiver, but the DT lost 7-6 grace á some creative officiating on the part of Daily Bruin people. Reported by Elisa Rae Ung. Johnson was originally drafted out of high school by the Atlanta Braves in the 3rd round of the 1982 June draft, but chose to attend USC...once an avid photographer, Randy had his work featured at Art Expo '90 in Los Angeles...Randy has had his taste of Hollywood, making a cameo appearance in the baseball movie "Little Big League". (info from Arizona Diamondbacks page). On May 18, 2004, now-40-year-old Johnson became the oldest player to pitch a perfect game against the Atlanta Braves, retiring all 27 hitters, including the last batter Eddie Perez on a 98 mph fastball. This was the first no-hitter in Diamondback history, the second in Johnson's career. Against Detroit on June 2 1990, he recorded the Seattle Mariners' first no-hitter, walking six. Johnson also recorded his 4,000th strikeout on June 29, 2004 in a loss to the San Diego Padres by retiring fellow former Trojan Jeff Cirillo on a full-count slider. He joins Nolan Ryan, his mentor, Roger Clemens, and Steve Carlton in the 4,000 K club, and is the second lefty to do so. He is the fastest player to achieve this mark, taking 3,237 1/3 innings (Ryan took 3,844 2/3 innings to record 4,000, Clemens took 4151, and Carlton 4991 1/3 innings). His 196 two-digit strikeout games were second only to Ryan with 215 at this point. On May 8, 2001, Johnson tied the MLB record for most strikeouts in nine innings when he sent 20 Cincinnati Reds packing. His five Cy Young Awards are just shy of Ryan's record six.

Ken cops a plea: "Got married on July 29, 2000. My wife's name is Nicole and we had been together since 1991. Yep, it took us a long time to stop procrastinating (though three years of law school and starting a new career was the primary reason we weren't married sooner). On the professional front, got some experience in media law defending Consumers Union (Consumer Reports magazine) against libel suits filed by Isuzu and Suzuki. After a two-month trial in early 2000, a jury ruled against Isuzu. The judge has thrown the Suzuki case out of court."

Justice, Glen
City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer
1990? - 1993
Glen has been hired (2003) by The New York Times, in the D.C. bureau, where he will cover campaign finance -- good time to get that beat, eh? I last saw Glen in the Ethics in Journalism class I was taking, where his response to nearly every situation was "run it." He has worked for Bloomberg News Service -- and had fun in Florida during the post-election madness. He was in the Harrisburg bureau of the Philadelphia Inquirer. I know he did some string work for the Boston Globe and the New York Times. He went to New Orleans to work for the Times Picayune, and he and Petula Dvorak were happily and lavishly wed in a big New Orleans blowout complete with a mini-Mardi Gras parade. (These events are mostly ouf of order, sorry!)
