LaPorte, W.R. "Ralph"
Editor, founder of the DT (well, OK, it wasn't called that then);
1911 - 1913
W.R. "Ralph" LaPorte founded the DT - except at the time it was called the Daily Southern Californian. LaPorte convinced USC President George Finley Bovard that the time was right for the university's weekly student news publication to go into newsprint (instead of magazine) form. This happened in September, 1912. He later ended up working in the administration at USC for some time. Submitter: Michael Carter

1980? - 1982?
John Lamb, working for a business publication in San Diego. Yep. Maybe. Casey Wian remembers climbing into the dumpster next to the administration building in the middle of the night with John, searching through the trash, finding the agenda and location for the "secret" trustees meeting, then driving out to La Quinta and waiting outside the trustee meeting with cocktails in hand. "Boy, were they surprised to see us," Wian says.

Metro assignment editor at the Miami Herald since 2002. Previously editor and reporter at the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel 1994-2002; reporter at the Fresno Bee (1992-94); reporter at the Sacramento Bee (1980-92); miscellaneous small newspaper and radio jobs before that. Author of 8 cookbooks. Married to Terry Jackson, magazine editor and former newspaperman, since 1980. No children. Sarah Heck (DT 1972-'76) is still one of my closest friends, although we live at opposite ends of the country. Being an editor has made me even crankier, and Sarah and my husband are two of the few people who can talk me out of that state of mind.

Staff Writer, Copy Editor, Managing Editor, Chief Photographer, Columnist (The Morning After), Photographer
1993 - 1997 Personal recollections
Laura leaves this: "Well, I went across town at night to Daily Bruin territory (gasp) to get my paralegal certification for the past year, and landed a pretty cool gig as a Tax Paralegal for Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp on the west side. I visit the old roomie Jen Hamm in Europe once a year. I've been recently promoted to Co-Managing Director: Theatre for my nonprofit theatre/film production company Amadeus Stage & Film Co (www.amadeusco.com). I met up with Troy Witt this summer to borrow his negative scanner & re-embrace my photographic roots. I went out to visit Melanie Asp to watch the Trojans in the Rose Bowl for New Year's, and got to see her kick some broadcast ass producing the ten o'clock news live. Me: not married, no kids, still living at the swanky Hollywood apartment I shared with Jen. I still get roped into taking pictures of my friend's events (like sibling's weddings and movie screenings) since I'm the only photographer they know. And in the grand scheme of things, I've done so little with my life so far that being Managing Editor of the DT is still on my real-life grown-up resume..."

Jackie Lapin
|
Staff Writer
1971 - 1973
Jackie had her own public relations company for more years than I have fingers. In 1996, she voted to simplify her life, closed the agency and joined Ruder Finn. On Tax Day of 1998, she left to become a consultant working out of her Westlake Village home. Before all that, she taught journalism at Cal State Northridge and began writing what would become two books on women's athletic administration. She also operates Sphere's To You, the world's leading seller of mineral spheres -- polished round rocks and marbles. She is not married and has no children. Details forthcame from Bob Ingram.

Lapin, Lisa
Staff Writer
1985 - 1985
From Jennifer Cray: "Lisa worked for the SJ Mercury News then the Sacramento Bee for several years. She's now the Director of the news service at UC Davis. Drop her an email." But Lisa herself adds much more: "I was a staff writer for the Daily Trojan for only one semester, Jan-May 1985, my first semester at USC after transferring to the J-school from UC San Diego. I then got an internship/clerkship at the L.A. Bureau of the N.Y. Times, and dropped the DT work. I worked as a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News from the time I graduated (with a B.A. in print journalism in Dec. 86), in Jan. 1987 through Dec. 1991, and was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize in April 1990 for coverage of the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake. I was at the Sacramento Bee in Jan. 1992, first as a higher education writer, then political writer (covering state Legislature and Huffington-Feinstein U.S. Senate race), before heading to the city desk, as government editor, education editor, and finally city editor. With two young children at home and too many late hours, I left the Bee in March 1998 to run the News Service at UC Davis. I have a staff of nine, including 5 PIOs, a broadcast program and the weekly faculty/staff newspaper staff. I am married to Tom Philp, associate editor (writes columns, editorials, commentary) of the Sacramento Bee, and kids are Max, 7 and Charlotte, 5."

Beth has been given the title of senior vice president of media relations for Universal Studios, though I've also heard she isn't working there any more. Joel Ordesky originally tipped me with this note: "OK here is one for you. Beth Laski. She was executive film editor for the Hollywood Reporter, resigning earlier this year as part of a controversy over the HR's columnist George Christie. Previous to that she worked for KCBS as an investigative reporter and prior to that she was with the Daily News." and Variety, adds this editor. She's also freelanced for NPR, the L.A. Times and Premiere magazine, according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter about her Universal posting. Also might have been Cinescape's West Coast Editor.

Photographer, Photo Editor
1999? - 2003?
Crystal went to USC thinking all the world's a stage ... until she stumbled upon a photojournalism class, picked up a camera and never put it down. After turning the DT's photo department from sorry stepchild to respected staff, she retired into El Rod glory her senior year. In August 2004, Crystal began work as a photog for the Tampa Tribune. Not even a month into her gig, she was sent all over Florida to shoot Hurricane Charley's destruction. Sports Editor
1990 - 1993
Reports (for that's what he does best) Mike: "I've decided to leave FOX Sports after 4 years for a new opportunity. I will be the Assistant Managing Editor and Sports Editor for Los Angeles Newspaper Group Online Content beginning October 7." Laz is one of the few 1990s Daily Trojan sports editors who didn't wind up working at USC. He's went to Fox Sports News as a researcher and then the Fox Sports Web site, working as an "associate producer in charge of all sorts of statistical tables, charts, stories." He was one of the people wandering in the background during the sports broadcasts. Laz was also a writer for the downtown sports desk of the L.A. Times, and before that in The Valley.

1989 - 1993
Marisa continues to temp in the L.A. area, and was recently IDed talking to Melissa Heng, on Heng's flyby from Australia. Says Marisa "I'm still temping, but that ends in August, when I start my M.F.A. in Screenwriting at Loyola Marymount University here in L.A. That's also the point at which my boyfriend, Gerard Collins (also a USC, but not a DT alum), will be moving in with me and my two cats, assuming none of us chickens out (cats included). I'm also a fairly active volunteer at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood -- come down, see a weird film, and probably not recognize me now that I have (comparatively) long hair!" Marisa did an internship at the Times, long ago, but was nonplused (does that mean minused?)

Levy, Frederick "Fred"
Staff Writer
1989 - 1991
Fred is pleased as punch to announce the formation of his new company: Management 101. He had been vice president of development and production at Marty Katz Productions. While Frederick was with that company, he was involved with such films as Man of the House, Mr. Wrong and Titanic (he was in life boat #13) (kidding.) The writer in him still breathes: He's written three books. Hollywood 101: The Film Industry (Renaissance), an L.A. Times best seller, is a survey of the film biz as well as a guide to getting started in a showbiz career. The Ultimate Boy Band Book (Pocket/Archway) is a look at the multi-billion dollar boy band phenomenon. The Hollywood Way, a game plan for successful business skills, is a rollicking good read. On the movie front, Frederick was one of the producers on FRAILTY (movie people capitalize films because they cost so much) starring Matthew McConaghey and Bill Paxton. He's also taught various film classes at USC School of Cinema-TV, UCLA Extension, and the LA branch of Emerson College. His students have to buy his book, natch. Fred worked at KSCR (join their alumni discussion list at kscr-alum-at-onelist.com). Also, for the record, the entertainment/diversions section was called Performance while he was at the paper.
