Lichterman, Mitch
Staff Writer
1981? - 1981? Personal recollections
Transfered and graduated from The University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Former entertainment/sports reporter at KOMU in Columbia, Missouri. President of loanguy.com, Mortgage Banker located in Los Angeles, and AutoLink Payment Services, an electronic payment service which offers the Mortgage Saver Bi-Weekly Payment Program to consumers throughout the United States. Mitch minces no words: I left the DT after 2 years and got my degree at University of Missouri. I became a sports/entertainment reporter for just a short time. I ultimately decided that I loved Sports too much to cover it. It took the fun out. I came back to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. I ended up a substitute teacher in LA Unified and met another teacher who also sold real estate part time. He encouraged me to purchase a house and at 25 years old I bought a home and never looked back. I've been working in the real estate industry for the past 17 years."

Lin, Cynthia
Staff Writer
1988 - 1990
Cynthia Lin is now the communications guru for Wal-Mart.com, this attested to by Yumi Wilson. After SC... Worked at KCBS-TV in LA for a year as a field producer (1991-1992). Also, did some freelance print reporting. In 1992, got first on-air reporting job offer from KFSM-TV, the CBS affiliate in Fayetteville/Fort Smith, AR. Did general assignment reporting and fill-in anchoring for about three years. In 1995, made the jump to corporate, joining Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Worked there a year, then left the company to move back to California, working at a multimedia company. A year later, in 1997, Wal-Mart re-approached her about coming back to work for them -- this time, doing public affairs for the Western Region and being based in Southern Cal. Managed media, community and government relations. Traveled about 75 percent of the time. Had the opportunity to visit many towns and cities all across the Western U.S. Did that for three years. Last fall, though, she joined Walmart.com, moved to San Francisco and is adjusting to life in the Bay Area. Is the public relations manager at Walmart.com, serving as spokeswoman and managing media relations. Recently reconnected with fellow journalism major Yumi Wilson whom I hadn't seen since college! Don't know who else from our journalism class may be out here....

Now in Orange County, she is toying with the idea of pursuing graphic design in Italy. And yes, that is so how you spell it.

Long, Chris
Staff Writer
1972 - 1975
Chris Long, opines Kevin McKenna, was a sportswriter for the South Bay Daily Breeze. Sherry Stern happens to know that Chris Long is now a sports copy editor at the Orange County Register. Once Chris heard about this, he immediate wrote to verify it... "This is Chris Long, Journalism '75. I began at USC in Sept. 1972 as a JC transfer from Santa Monica College and graduated 2-1/2 years later in the January, 1975 ceremony at the Shrine. Sherri Stern is correct, I am on the sports copy desk at the Orange County Register, mostly slotting. Oops, my job name has changed. Some computer geeks in Denmark decided that slotting is now Quality Checking. So, I am a Quality Checker. That will look good on my resume... My career has had its ups and downs. I started part time at the Santa Monica Outlook in 1970 ... was hired full time in Aug. of 1975 ... survived the Outlook's purchase by Copley Newspapers in 1982 ... survived a merger with the South Bay Daily Breeze in 1986 ... did not survive economic cutbacks in 1995, being laid off after 20 years of loyal service ... The Outlook proved they couldn't survive without me, folding up entirely in 1998. The Breeze still exists, a shell of its former self. Did a five-month desk temp stint at the OC Register ... did a 14-month desk stint at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune ... just finished my third year back on the sports desk at the OC Register. In 25 years of writing from '70 to '95, I covered preps, JCs, Dodgers, Angels, Kings, Trojans, Bruins, golf and tons of other stuff. Now, I'm very satisfied to let others do the digging and let me fix it up before it hits print.

Lopez, Hortensia
Staff Writer
1985? - 1987?
Hello, Hortensia: "After graduation, I went on to an internship at the The Press Enterprise in Riverside. I spent the summer in their newsroom and about six months in their business department. After that, I went on to The Herald in Monterey, where I spent about fours years reporting on general news, crime, schools. After that, I moved on to The Modesto Bee and spent about six months in their Turlock bureau. ÊI left to accept an offer I couldn't resist: an editing job in Tokyo. I spent the first two years working for a Japanese newspaper, editing translated copy for their magazines, and learning about the lives of salaried employees ('salary men'). When my contract was up, I didn't renew and took a proofreader position at Stars & Stripes. I went on to work on the copy desk and then as assistant pacific editor. All the while, I worked part-time writing captions for the Fuji News Network's news show. It was all such a great experience. ÊWhen I I got married in 1998 (being a Tokyo or local hire, I didn't qualify for bachelorette housing at Stripes anymore), I left Stars & Stripes and went to work for Kyodo News Service, where I had also been working part-time while at Stripes. After I moved back to LA in 1998, I had a hard time finding work. Eventually, I did land a job at the American Film Marketing Association, a trade group of indie filmmakers. I produced their newsletter and other pieces there for three and a half years. And here I am now, trying my hand at user documentation for Epson products." Hortensia is now working for Epson America Inc. in Long Beach, CA, editing user manuals and other documentation. She is the proud mother of two boys and has some very fond memories of the DT!

Lowe, Mark
City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer,
1983 - 1985
This editor violated rule one of reporting: I got Mark's name wrong. Mark, Mark, Mark. It's Mark. Not Mike. There, all better. So what's Mark doing now? Well, after being a regular at Kathy Libby's parties with Steve DeSalvo, Laura Castaneda, Mike Molinski, et al., he wandered aimlessly after graduation (coincidence? doubtful). He landed at the National Captioning Institute in Los Angeles, 1989, and from there went to City News Service in Los Angeles, 1990, and ran its Orange County bureau, 1991-1994. Then moved briefly to BusinessWire, but since late 1995 has been one-half of the public relations department of the California Credit Union League. Mark's working slowly on a second bachelor's degree in philosophy at Cal State Fullerton; plans to go on to get his Ph.D. in philosophy "before I'm 60." P.S. He's the only alumnus who's ever reported to me his full 9-digit zip code.

In 1995, Doug published a well-reviewed book, "Pink Tanks and Velvet Hangovers: An American in Prague." To those who knew Doug, that title should come as no surprise. Reported by Steven De Salvo.
