Malamud, Allan
Sports Editor
1959? - 1963?
From an obit by Joe Soqui in the DT: "Allan Malamud, former Daily Trojan Sports Editor and longtime columnist for both the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and the Los Angeles Times, died Sept. 14, 1996, of natural causes. He was 54. Malamud is best known for his column "Notes on a scorecard" that appeared four times a week in the sports section of the Times. He graduated from USC in 1963 and was quickly hired by the Herald-Examiner in the same year. The next 32 years of his life were spent focusing on the Los Angeles sports scene. His column was exactly what it was called--a series of notes and tidbits that no one else in the business seemed to get a hold of. He covered a variety of sports from horse racing to boxing to football in Los Angeles. Malamud was the sports editor of the Daily Trojan in 1963 and is regarded as one of the most famous journalists to come out of the university. He also had a short role in many films, including "Raging Bull" and "White Men Can't Jump."

Manley, Victoria "Vickie" "Vic"
 |
This one was captioned simply "Mel Vic Grind."
|
Editor, City Editor, Viewpoint Editor, Columnist
1993 - 1997 Personal recollections
See Vickie. See Vickie cover the City of Monterey for The Monterey County Herald (a Knight Ridder paper). Now she's the paper's business editor -- all the more appropriate now that she owns her own house. She's also started, with her sister, an antique business, Sister Chic. If the name doesn't give it away, they specialize in "shabby chic" furniture. And she's also the proud "parent" of a 3-year-old mutt, Nigel. Cutest thing you could ever see. Oh, and one more thing -- she's also gone back to school, pursuing a masters of science in organization development at the University of San Francisco. Makes me tired just reading about it all. Previous Vickie bits: Spent time in Italy to finish up her first degree. Worked in late 1998 in Salinas at The Californian.

Manty, Mika
Staff Writer
1987 - 1987 Personal recollections
Mika's current last name is LaVaque-Manty as a result of a marriage (despite his being a guy -- long story available by request). He did support himself occasionally with journalistic pursuits in Finland in the late 80s, but he went to grad school at Michigan and got a Ph.D. in philosophy in '98, focusing on political theory. He was an assistant professor in political science at the University of Washington 1998-2001. Since 2001, he has been an assistant professor of political science at the University of Michigan. While living in Seattle, he reconnected with Brad Bowlin -- in the context of distance running, if you can believe that -- but has since lost touch.

Now I am a third year law student at Yale Law School. I am still not quite sure what I want to do when I grow up - but I am looking forward to finally graduating (and rejoining the workforce). I hope everyone is doing well and look forward to our class reunion. Cheers!"

2000 - 2004 Personal recollections
Forwarding an excerpt of an e-mail Arash -- nothing too personal: "Dear friends and family, so I finally decided what I'm going to be doing with the rest of my life (well, at least for the next year or so) as I accepted a job at Sports Illustrated. I will be writing for their new magazine, Sports Illustrated On Campus during the fall and spring semesters and reporting for SI when SIOC is not publishing. I begin work August 1, [2004,] which means I'll be moving out to New York at the end of July. I will also continue to freelance for other New York-based magazines such as Slam, King, Rides and a new soccer magazine, Striker, which starts production in November." He's been given his own column, "The Hot Read." Ryan Pearson reports spotted Arash. Staff Writer, Columnist, Angry Young Cartoonist
1990 - 1992
Larry Stone chiseled me this message recently: "Brian McDonough just got a job as an editor of a mobile phone mag in S.F. and tonight he'll tell me all about it over a Guinness I hope." Brian was assistant editor at a magazine in Sacramento, which, he assured me, was a lot more interesting than it sounds. He got sick of Tokyo, where he was copy editing and stuff for the tiny English edition of the largest and most evil newspaper on earth. Before that, he was allegedly living in Monrovia, on the San Gabriel Valley Tribune/Pas Star News copy desk, according to reliable eyewitness reports from other DT veterans. Won a tiny 997 L.A. Press Club award for a headline: "Scalp Me, Elmo." He was one of 4 winners, and not the top one. But, still. Prior to that, he taught English in Osaka and wandered the U.S. unemployed. Immediately after college, he worked for Entrepreneur magazine, in the bowels of Orange County. No, Garden Grove is the bowels of Orange County. He lived in Costa Mesa, which is, maybe, the spleen of Orange County. (Some rumors from Eddie Siegel.)

Kevin McKenna
|
Editor
1973 - 1976
Kevin McKenna has been editor of the Circuits section since February 2001 after two years as technology editor. His daughter, Felicity, (who I belive predates the television show) is now 4. He was, in 1997, at Stanford for a one-year fellowship program for journalists (the Knight Journalism Fellowship), which allows 19 burnt-out professionals to study "pretty much whatever we want," says Kevin. He was editorial director of The New York Times Electronic Media Company, a group formed in 1995 to oversee the newspaper's on-line and multimedia endeavors. He came to The Times as a copy editor on the Foreign Desk in 1984, and served from 1987 to 1989 as assistant foreign editor. From 1989 to 1993 he was deputy news editor, with responsibilities including layout of the front page. He spent 1994 as assistant metropolitan editor, in charge of weekend coverage.
He began his career as a reporter for The Associated Press in Los Angeles and Raleigh, N.C., and spent five and a half years in Paris as an editor for The International Herald Tribune. A sixth-generation Californian, he graduated from the University of Southern California and has a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.
He has a big bio because he's been extremely helpful in tracking down other alumni--feel free to follow his example and reap a long bio of your own!
