Paddock, Charles W. "Charlie"
Editor
1917? - 1921?
Charlie Paddock was an Olympic sprint champion and one of the great sprinters of all time, famous for his "flying finish." Was a character in the movie "Chariots of Fire." Knew, I'm told, Jackson Schultz. Became, I believe, an editor or publisher of Pasadena Star-News. Died in plane crash in 1944, WW II, off the coast of Sitka, Alaska, according to his grand daughter. He's now at the Los Angeles Times, but Steve Padilla says he spent so much time at the DT, it's a wonder he graduated. I bet more than a few on this list feel the same :) . He was recently spotted at Unity '99. Is he married to Pauline Yoshihashi? Hmmmm.

Pan, Elaine
Assistant City Editor, Staff writer,
1992 - 1995
Elaine wrote for the Daily Trojan and filed some nifty stories. Went off to Seattle for a stint as a copy editor for the Seattle Times. She took her clip book over to the USC News service and did some time there as Technology Coordinator. Then one day, she got a job at the Los Angeles Times web site where she is now Assistant General Manager / Executive Producer calendarlive.com and latimes.com (this editor's old job). E-mail her at elaine.zinngrabe-at-latimes.com. She lives in Long Beach, and is now Elaine Zinngrabe (you might have caught that from the otherwise inexplicable email address), following a June 1997 merger with C.J. same last name. She's also the Los Angeles chapter president of the Asian American Journalists Association, and was spotted at Unity '99. She's also working on an M.B.A. (More Better Adult?)

Paquette, Aaron
Staff Writer
1995 - 1997 Personal recollections
Aaron in a nutshell: "In my sophomore year (95/96), shortly after I began writing for the DT, I started an internship with CBS Television. I worked in the research department, putting out the infamous "Nielsen ratings," doing programming studies, and covering focus groups on our TV shows and pilots. As I was starting my senior year (97/98), they put me on staff as an analyst, where I continued to do the same work but got benefits. As a media junkie, I loved working there and learning more about TV and how it's developed, produced, programmed, marketed, and researched. Shortly after graduating in 1998, I followed a CBS colleague over to Columbia TriStar Television, where I became a Senior Analyst in their research department. This time around, I was in syndication, so I got to follow the ratings for shows like RICKI LAKE and VIP in 210 markets, write sales presentations to get our shows sold or renewed, help on press releases and trade ads, etc. Two years later, I became the lone-gunman cable analyst, covering ratings and sales presentations for our first-run shows (like STRONG MEDICINE and RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT) as well as the older shows we sell to cable (such as ALL IN THE FAMILY on Nick at Nite). Today, I'm the Manager of Cable and Network Research for Columbia TriStar. All in all, my six years in TV have been great, but I do miss writing on a regular basis. I put out a lot of e-mails in the office covering TV news and trends and analyzing what's happening in the marketplace, but those don't completely fill the void. That's why I continue to write on the side; currently, I'm working on an investment/financial planning guide as well as a movie script. Someday I'd like to go back to writing for a newspaper; after four years in high school and two years in college, it's a tough habit to break.

Patman, Richard "Dick"
Sports Editor
1957 - 1961 Personal recollections
Patman was passionate about both USC and college sports, and he is still. He well remembers helping with the "phoney" Daily Bruin issued prior to the UCLA game in 1958. He was the first local journalist to interview an unknown assistant coach named John McKay. Says Dick: "Following graduation in 1961, I entered the army reserve only to find my unit activiated (July 1961) by Pres. Kennedy as a reaction to theÊBerlin Wall construction. Upon return to civilian life in August 1962, I learned that the four major metro dailies in L.A. had contracted into two dailies. No journalism jobs available in late 1962. With a new wife to support, I changed course and started work in Banking management. Seven years later, I moved to an audit manager position at Occidental Life in L.A. My responsibility was to oversee all special investigations concerning both agent and employee theft and fraud. Journalism training proved to be an invaluable assetÊin that it taught people skills, how to conduct effective interviews, investigative techniques to obtain information, and most of all, how to write and communicate efficently and with impact.ÊÊI had a rewarding career and retired at age 57 in Jan. 1997. We moved toÊEugene, Oregon, and have been active in the community since arriving."

Mark Patton
|
Editorial Director, Staff Writer, Features Editor, Editor of So Cal Magazine
1973 - 1976 Personal recollections
Mark Patton is the sports editor of the Santa Barbara News-Press, according to the illuminating Kevin McKenna. Says Patton himself: "In my first newspaper job, I was a police-courts-education reporter/janitor/paper boy at the Santa Maria Times from 1976 to 1977. I was briefly promoted to sports editor there before accepting a sports writing job at the Santa Barbara News-Press in December of 1977. Too lazy to ever move again, and despite three ownership changes, I've been there ever since. We were sold recently by the New York Times (apparently on the passionate recommendation of Times-staffer and ex-DT colleague Kevin McKenna) to a Santa Barbara billionairess, Wendy McCaw. I was "promoted" upwards to sports editor six years ago. I still write columns and cover UC Santa Barbara men's basketball. I have told my editor-in-chief that I will keep that beat until the Gauchos finally make it back to the NCAA Tournament. I figure that way, I will live forever. Smart, huh?"

1988? - 1989?
It started with this mysterious message: "AT KCBS. WAS ON THE MORNING SHOW FOR A WHILE IN EASRLY (sic) '97 BUT HAVEN'T SEEN HER LATELY." It led to the official bio on the KCBS site: "Kyra Phillips joined the CBS 2 News team in September of 1995 and is now an investigative reporter for the award-winning Special Assignment unit. Her career in journalism began in the fourth grade when she created a school newspaper. Prior to CBS 2, Phillips was weekend anchor/reporter for WDSU-TV in New Orleans, LA. She has also worked as the weekend anchor/reporter at WLUK-TV in Green Bay, WI and at KAMC-TV in Lubbock, TX. Phillips worked as a field producer for CNN-Telemundo in Washington, D.C."
But now that bio is gone, Kyra has moved to Atlanta, and we refer you to the CNN bio, which reports: "In 1999, Phillips garnered three Emmy awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award for her investigative reporting. In 1997, she also won an Edward R. Murrow Award and was named the Associated Press Reporter of the Year."

Peter Plagens Credit: David Berkwitz, Newsweek
|
Cartoonist
1958 - 1962 Personal recollections
Latest news: Peter has an introspective art show on at USC's Fischer Gallery. Peter purports: "Plagens was the editorial-page cartoonist 1958-62. His best drawings were a riff on Tenniel for a Through-the-Looking-Glass "expose" of secret, Greek-based political parties at USC. (Well, that was a heavy subject back then.) He's an abstract painter who lives in New York and doubles as the art critic for Newsweek magazine." He's been a teacher, was published several books, and has an MFA from Syracuse. More specifically: Peter was an art major at USC, went immediately to graduate school at syracuse, got an mfa degree in painting, and came back to L.A. He's been an art professor for twenty years, ended up chairing a dept. at UNC, Chapel Hill. "Plighted my troth" with NY at age 44. Got a job at Newsweek. "ending" when he took a buyout in 2003, but they've kept him on as art critic on a contributing editor basis. the best of both worlds, he says: "My own painting and the semblance of a job at the same time." Lives in the classic loft, downtown (Tribeca is the neighborhood) Manhattan. married, second time (but for 22 years now) to a painter/art-professor, and his daughter goes to Kenyon College and wants to write.

1982 - 1984 Personal recollections
Ellen, now Ellen Mulholland, is living in Northern California with her two incredibly amazing kids. After four years training to be a journalist, Ellen has spent the last 12 years teaching. She teaches math and science to hormone-popping sixth graders - and loves it! Says Ellen: "After graduation I dodged journalism after short reporting stints for the former Herald Ex writing up drunk driving deaths and interviewing mourning mothers over the tragic deaths of their innocent young boys caught in the crossfire of LA gang shootings. I moved to London, wrote a novel I have still yet to publish. Returned two years later, secured a Teaching Credential, feeling I'd rather influence those youths and help them avoid the gunfire. I work with fifth and sixth graders. In my 11 years I have helped students through attempted suicides, deaths of a parent, the death of a classmate, breaking up of a family. I am at the start of getting my Administrative Credential and Masters in Counseling."

Pogatchnik, Shawn
Chief Copy Editor, Assistant City Editor, City Editor, Editorial Director
1986 - 1990
Shawn has a gift of gab, and writes me with this: "A four-line description, me arse. Been working the past decade for the AP, as Ireland correspondent since 1995. As of 2002, still toiling away for the AP in Dublin and Belfast, these days more in Dublin, because 4-year-old David has just started at the school next door. Getting Dave into his uniform and to the gates is a better way to get out of bed in the morning than the old method of having a news editor bark at you over the phone. The major AP event these days is getting a flak jacket that fits me; the last one shipped over worked great unless you tried to sit down or bend over, either of which proved impossible, which meant if you came under sniper fire you'd better not drop your notepad. Have been trying to persuade bosses without success for me to buy a kit of body armor from a local Northern Ireland supplier, since this is something of a local speciality. Nope, too logical. So until this problem gets sortted I'll have to boycott all properly dangerous assignments and stick to punishing my liver. The strangest assignment this year has been a 22-hour flight via Ascension Island to the Falklands in the pit of the South Atlantic winter to commemorate the 20th anniversary of war's end. It was so cold, even the penguins left. The dumbest assignment ever was last October, when based on some hyped ABC report I was ordered to this island six hours north of Glasgow to write about 'Anthrax Island,' where the stuff was tested as a possible weapon in WWII. Lots of sheep died in 1942, and that's as exciting as the island's history ever got. I spent time interviewing people about their fears (none) of living so close to a not-dangerous island, and the local sailor who was charging idiot TV crews 600 quid a head to ferry them to the island, about half a mile off the mainland. This guy, needless to say, could barely stop laughing long enough to tell his fellow pubgoers about these insane reporters in their moonsuits." Previous Shawn newsworthy notes including his covering the Tour de France and being sent to Sydney for a hard tour of Olympic duty. He's been the AP's Ireland correspondent since 1994, bopping between homes/offices in Belfast and Dublin. Married Jan Wilson, beautiful Irish lass [are they ever otherwise? - ed.] , in 1993, became proud father of David in 1998. Sent to cover Rwandan civil war and genocide ("appalling, dangerous") in 1994, Yugoslavia in 1995 ("lovely Croat coasts and fortunately on right side of artillery fire most of the time"). Was Rob Kendt's roomie back in '87 ("and he never forgave me"). He was given an Alicia Patterson fellowship and sabbatical from daily AP duties to work on his long-postponed book about Northern Ireland and its peace process ("but will I ever finish it? And would anyone read it anyway?") Of course we would, Shawn, of course we would. Shawn accepts visitors at both his Dublin home and Belfast loft. So use him mercilessly! Give him enough pints and he will drive you all over Erin.

Assistant News Editor, News Editor (twice), eSCence editor, City Editor, Assignment Editor
1989 - 1993
Polay (still goes by spolay, his original ATEX logon; now e-mail handle) remains ensconced as news & operations manager of projo.com, the Web site of The Providence Journal. Just passed 5 years there, as a matter of fact. When not running the Web site, he spends many evenings crafting culinary delights while refereeing his two boys, Sam and Mason, as they try to play with the same toy. Sean and his wife, Brandy, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third child. If it's another boy, they're switching to Kevlar home furnishings.

Dan Povenmire
|
Cartoonist (Life Is a Fish)
1985 - 1991
Dan Povenmire got married in 2001 in Venezuela to an industrial designer/model maker named Clarissa. Though known to most as "the guy with the big head," Dan has achieved fame in a second way at Fox TV Animation, where he was directing for the prime time animation show, "Family Guy". After Family Guy, Dan went returned to Nickelodeon (he'd worked there previously), writing and directing for SpongeBob Squarepants. And just when you thought this description couldn't get more convoluted, he is now at Warner Bros writing and directing new Looney Tunes animated shorts to be shown in front of Warner Bros movies. He still has a band (Keep Left). Their second CD "Letters from Fielding" available through from Arizona University Recordings via the Internet at aurec.com or by e-mailing him directly. Dan's house is in Pasadena with a view of Mount Wilson, shared with Clarissa, his cat (list, not appositive), and occasionally with the band members and visiting cartoonists. ("Dijon the Armadillo's" Larry Stone stayed with Dan when in Los Angeles). Lastly, he's playing a lot of volleyball, so if anyone knows any good games in the Pasadena area, email him pronto.

Prizer, Ed
Editor
1943? - 1947?
This obituary is from the Orlando Business Journal, January 17, 2003: Ed Prizer, longtime Orlando publisher, dies. The founder of Orlando's oldest city magazine died Wednesday(January 15, 2003. DW) after a lengthy illness. Prizer, 80, a former Associated Press executive from New York, moved to Central Florida in 1951 and purchased a local tourist guide, the "Orlando-Winter Park Attraction," which he renamed "Orlando-Land." According to one of the magazine's former publishers, Randy Noles, Prizer spent decades transforming what eventually became "Orlando" magazine into an award-winning publication at a time of one of the area's most significant growth periods. Prizer, his wife, Artice, and his staff shifted the editorial emphasis away from traditional tourist-oriented content of similar magazines and focused instead on the growth and development issues facing Orlando. Prizer personally wrote much of the material about the boom during the construction of Walt Disney World, and afterward and became a source for the local history during those boom years. In 1988, after more than 20 years of growth and success, Prizer sold the magazine and assumed the publisher emeritus title. He stepped down entirely in 1992 and retired.

Pullin, Kelly
Chief Copy Editor, Editorial Director, Assistant City Editor, Co-Diversions Editor
1995 - 1999
Kelly Pullin graduated from USC, according to Elisa Ung. She went to, and returned from, Portland, OR, with her fabulous boyfriend Jason Spencer, and Kelly Pullin is now "Marketing Specialist" for a catalog company in Torrance. Dig the fancy title. Portland was cold, dark, and wet, but there she discovered that she "loves the business world, and marketing in particular. Go figure. At one point, I was positive that I wanted to be a copy editor!"
