Raatz Jr., David e-mail: raatz-at-abanet.org    Absolutely none    1987 - 1987
I'll let David explain why he's not supposed to be on this list: "Sports editor Ara Najarian was kind enough to offer me a job in the summer of '87. Alas, I opted instead to retain my position as a Student Assistant SID in the Athletic Dept., and I never had a DT byline. So, I'm not a DT alumnus. But I'm honored to be listed among the DT luminaries on this site."

Kaushik Ranchod

   Editorial Columnist    1994 - 1994
Kaushik used to live in Colonial House (which just recently burnt to the ground, according to another alum). He was studying for the LSAT when last I heard from him via email in 1994. But then I got this note, so I guess it all worked out: "Kaushik practices in the areas of immigration and nationality law with emphasis in employment and family-based immigration. Mr. Ranchod is admitted to practice before the California Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Northern and Eastern Districts of California. Kaushik Ranchod serves on the Board of Directors for the South Asian Bar." His law firm takes Pay Pal -- I think that's very savvy of him.

Web sez: "Preemptive buy from first-time scribe, to be produced by Gary Ross and Jane Sindell's Larger Than Life Prods. Ross may direct as well. Speaking of Ratner, Ross said, 'He has one of the most unique voices I've seen in a long, long time.' Half that was spent doing computer games for EA, Lucas, and folks like that....years of high weirdness and big fun. Married a game designer. Also did quite a bit of travel and sports writing, edited some books, and has had a couple national magazine columns. Now semi-retired and homeschooling two precocious prepubescents in Half Moon Bay, CA. (You can bet these kids can punctuate.)

Reyes, Melanie e-mail: mrsoqui-at-sbcglobal.net    Co-Diversions Editor, City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer,    1995 - 1998
Melanie was working for a small town weekly in central California. She was there more than a year when she and longtime beau Joseph Soqui decided to exit the ink-stained wretch profession and move into education (the chalk-stained profession?). Now they both teach elementary education. Vickie says "Soqui's a kindergarten teacher, how precious is that?!, and Melanie the 1st grade. Too cute for words, I'd say. As far as I know, they're still together and happy as ever." Melanie reports they're all that happy and more: they got married in June 2002, and had a son in November 2003. Now they're back in L.A. County, still teaching!

Rifkin, Adam Web page: http://us.imdb.com/Name?Rifkin,+Adam    Editorial Cartoonist,    1984 - 1985
Disney has chosen Adam Rifkin to write and direct "Posse," a sci-fi action comedy. The deal is worth a high six-figure sum, with Rifkin to complete the screenplay in order to get the picture approved by Disney for Rifkin to direct. The project will be produced by special f/x wizard Stan Winston. Rifkin has written and directed several feature films including "The Dark Backward" with Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton, and "The Chase" with Charlie Sheen. He wrote two of the first five Dreamworks features: "Mousehunt" and "Small Soldiers." He no longer wears mismatching stripes, polka dotted converse tennis shoes, or fluorescent green furry socks. (Source: Dan Povenmire, though this editor did see the Dark Backward at a midnight movie and was very uncomfortable walking back to his car alone for fear he might actually run into Mr. Rifkin.) Anecdote: Rifkin reportedly received a rejection letter from Hustler magazine for cartoon "too graphic" for their readership. Every effort will be made to recover this cartoon, if it truly exists. Anecdote update: Says Mike Melson: "Yes... that cartoon DID exist; it WAS rejected by Hustler; AND I remember it way too vividly."

Rogness, Chris e-mail: roggo-at-spies.com Web page: http://www.roggo.net/    Copy Editor    1990 - 1992   Personal recollections
Chris announces: "After graduation, I moved to Tokyo and worked as an editor for a textbook publishing firm. After a year of that, I returned to Iowa and worked as editor of the VDTA News, the monthly publication of the Vacuum Dealer's Trade Association, a prestigious and highly sought-after position with a giant in the publishing industry. Right. From there I became chief copy editor for The Communicator, a now-defunct alternative tri-weekly in Des Moines. It was about this time I realized that, as much as I loved it, I was never, ever going to make money as a journalist. So I sold out, moved to San Diego, and started working in software development. Spent five years working for Intel Corp., which I left last year to become manager of the publication and design department at a software startup. I've taken up competitive sailing, as well as mountain biking, golf, and some other hobbies that are simply impossible to pursue in Iowa in January.

Melanie Asp and Ron

   Prod God, Printer    1976 - 2001+
Ron, the Prod God, started at the Research Annex of USC in 1971. He worked at the DT from the time that it was still typewriters and a linotype with all the stories rekeyed to today, when they use Macs, scanners and all sorts of fancy-shmancy templates. And today (Oct. 20, 1996), I found out that Ron has an e-mail address and is responsible for the online version of the Daily Trojan. Be sure to drop Ron an e-mail.

You see, if I don't update these items, I run into problems like the one with this listing: I was still saying she was engaged, when really, she's married and pregnant. sigh. [extra embarrassing note: she now has two boys. ack!] Life sure does happen. Claudia has the somewhat lame honor of being the first person I added to this list that I could't remember personally, to my eternal regret. George Stankow assures me, though, that she was quite nice. Claudia recently got in touch with me and assured me she does exist and wrote for the paper for about one year -- just a handful of feature articles, theatre reviews and art reviews. She attended USC between 1990 - 1994: major - Social Sciences and Communications, minor - Spanish. She graduated with an MSW (Masters of Social Work) from USC in May, 1998. She's currently working at the Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles.

Ross, William B.    Editor    1933? - 1937?
August 24, 2003 the L.A. Times had paid obit on William B. Ross, 88, "political advisor and journalist." Obit said he had been editor of the DT. My records indicate he was a 1937 graduate of the School of Journalism, but he is not listed as editor. (Perhaps he was AN editor of some sort.) Died aug. 21 at Cedars Sinai "from complications following surgery." Obit said he was retired for last 8 years. "Called 'The Kingmaker' by the Saturday Evening Post, Ross' firm, Baus and Ross, was the most successful campaign management and advertising firm in California for over 40 years." Born 1915 in Spokane, graduated from Glendale High. ... "Avid horseback rider until the onset of his illness three months ago. He had been riding in the Burbank equestrian area since 1945, was widely admired for being the oldest rider in the area, and outlived three horses. He was a well known figure on the Griffith Park equestrian trails, riding several times a week." Active in banking. "In 1947, his father, William G. Ross, founded the golden State bank in Bell Gardens, California. William B. Ross served on the board of directors beginning in the mid-1970's. The bank ultimately grew to 134 branches in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In 1978, Golden State bank merged with the Sanwa Bank, and Mr. Ross continued on its board of directors for another 17 years." Obit said, he and partner Herbert Baus "went on to become the msot successful campaign management and advertising firm in the state of California. They were responsible for numerous successful campaigns for many of Los Angeles' and California's notable elected officials, as well as many groundbreaking propositions and bond issues. Among those crediting Ross for their ... elections were Los Angeles Mayors Sam Yorty and Norris Poulson, San Francisco Mayor George Cristopher, Los Angeles police Chief Tom Reddin..."

Runzler, Mike e-mail: runzcomm-at-pacbell.net Web page: http://www.quicken.com/    Editor of the Campus section, SoCal Editor, Managing Editor    1971 - 1975
Michael's career has taken him to the Silicon Valley, where he is senior corporate communications manager at Intuit, the people behind Quicken software. For someone who studiously avoided college math, he finds it ironic to be working for a company that designs income tax preparation and other financial software. He lives in Walnut Creek [tres chichi -ed.] with his wife and two daughters, the older of whom is hoping to be admitted to USC's class of '05. Runzler was director of worldwide public relations at Trimble Navigation in said fair berg and before that did 13 years of media relations, public policy and finance work at Pacific Bell and Pacific Telesis. Humorous writings of Runzler's recently appeared as a op-ed piece on area codes in the Christian Science Monitor, at the request of another DT alum, Clara Germani.
