Sabo, Jim e-mail: jim-at-jimsabo.com Web page: http://www.jimsabo.com/
Jim Sabo

Chief Photographer, Columnist (From This Angle)    1992 - 1993
Jim jives: "Not that my whole resume needs to be up there, but post-USBX [a B2B Web site thingy] I spent time at Fandango, which no one in L.A. has heard of, and in a week I'll be starting at Technicolor Digital Cinema, where I'll be specializing in satellite content delivery." Jim was the tallest programmer to launch the L.A. Times online (twice, on Prodigy and the Web) and went to work for Ticketmaster, where he wrote an online ordering system that you may have used. He also worked for DEN, a startup that broadcast original content via the web and then melted down in a public display of Web hubris. He lives in Pasadena, very close to Old Town.

Ben delivers: "I used to pride myself in throwing a frisbee from one side of the newsroom to the next ... over every reporter's head. Today, I write and direct documentaries for the CBS affiliate in Seattle. For what it's worth, I've won a Peabody, a duPont, 15 Emmys and 3 Edward R. Murrow awards for my work. I owe it all to frisbee."

Sanford, Danielle e-mail: danielle.fairlee-at-alumni.usc.edu Web page: http://www.dsfcommunications.com/    Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer    1986 - 1988
Don't know why, but I've always liked the name Danielle. It brings back memories of a girl named J.J. Daniels in my Grade 3 class. J.J. was tall and had braces, but also had an intellectual side and a laugh that she used even when the teacher told us to be quiet for "reading hour." J.J. and I weren't on the same bus, and I never got to know her very well, but I always thought she'd be a good friend forever. She went to another school for Grade 4, and I haven't seen her since. Ah, elementary school.
Anyway, about Danielle Sanford. Graduated in 1990 and went to work for Cerrell Associates Inc. in Los Angeles. After marrying USC alumnus Brian Fairlee in 1992 and having twin boys in 1994, started her own freelance PR business, DSF Communications, which she's operated "with reasonable success" for the past eight years. Says Danielle: "After taking up cycling and running a few years ago, my newest passion is multi-sport events. I completed my first sprint-distance triathlon in September 2003. Brian and I live in Woodland Hills."

Then perhaps covered agriculture for the Bakersfield Californian for awhile. It's all good. :) She had been on the business desk at The Desert Sun in Palm Springs. Hot stuff.

Saraspi, Carolyn e-mail: csaraspi-at-hotmail.com    City Editor, Assistant City Editor    1995 - 1996
Carolyn's now covering high-tech (no longer just business) in Marin County for the Marin Independent Journal. Recently, she wrote about the Napster trial. When she started in July 2000, it was a 40,000-circulation Gannett paper. But MediaNews Group, owned by Dean Singleton and parent company of ANG Newspapers (where she worked for the past four years), bought her paper! Anyway, she's covering everything from banking to retail to small business. Previously, her beat was education for The Daily Review newspaper in southern Alameda County. She followed big changes in California's educational system, including the new school accountability program and bilingual education. Carolyn started a teen page in that paper. She was also secretary of her newspaper chain's reporters' union and a writing coach for journalism students at San Francisco State University. Carolyn started at the Review after six months of stringing and part-timing at the Oakland Tribune (known for breaking the story on Ebonics). She also had a few groovy internships at the Alameda Times-Star and the Los Angeles Daily News. She keeps in touch with with fellow DT alumna Allison Vana.

2004 update: Now GM for Island Publications, Newsday's magazine publishing division. Worked on startup of amNewYork, a free daily in the city, last year. Reminded, he says, of the days when the typesetting system at the DT broke down every day! He had been chief of staff in the publisher's office at Newsday and before that used to be in charge of the library, among other jobs. Says Michael: "Worked with DT alumni Steve Clow, Valerie Nelson and Mike Ventre at the late, great Herald Examiner, then spent two stints at Newsday, separated by some trade-mag time with CMP and InfoWorld. Discovered sitting within 15 feet of former DT editor Kari Granville Boyer last year. Reports Schroeder: "Went to the Herald from there (copy desk and assistant business editor), working with other DT alums such as Steve Clow, Valerie Nelson and Dave Wharton (my first "going away" lunch as a manager was with Dave). Also, had the opportunity to share bouillabaisse with the late, great Allan Malamud. Went from the Herald to the OC Register (assistant business editor) for a brief stint, then headed to East to help start up New York Newsday. From the copy desk, worked in graphics for a while, then switched to editorial technology (that DT experience finally paid off!). Switched to trade newspapers with CMP Media in 1993, and took a flier on a net startup for that company, moving back to California in 1997. They closed down that operation six months later, cutting losses before going public. Not ready to come back to NY, jumped to their competitor, IDG, joining InfoWorld as information systems and production director. Moved back to Newsday last year (my wife's family is on Long Island, after all), and although the winter's a pain, am enjoying the work. Just finished an MBA from C.W. Post (after four schools and 13 years!)"

Schuler, Charli    Lifestyle Editor, Assistant Copy Editor, Assistant City Editor, City/Editorial Staff Writer    1998 - 2000
Charli worked as a publications editor at USC's Office of International Services and interned in the media relations department at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena for three years. She got her master's degree in professional writing, emphasizing in fiction, from USC in 2004. Now, after briefly considering a career in PR and a newt's lifetime studying forensic pathology in medical school, she is happily working nights a copy editor/page designer at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. In her spare time, she does surf and eat big, fat burritos (as someone previously pointed out), but she also reads, hangs out at bars and - oh, yeah - attempts to get some writing published.

[Do you have more info on Scott? Please share...] Journalist Vernon Scott, who covered Hollywood for United Press International for more than 50 years, died Nov. 2002 at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles following a heart attack. He was 79. Colleagues described Scott as quick-witted and friendly along with possessing a vast collection of anecdotes such as being slapped by Bette Davis for comparing her with Joan Crawford in a column, then being invited into her home for lunch. "He was completely down to earth with everryone and respected the field he covered but was never star-struck," recalled UPI entertainment reporter Pat Nason. He went on to interview virtually every major star for his "Scott's World" column, noting once that Marilyn Monroe was one of his favorites. Scott formed friendships with many top stars. Jerry Lewis was the best man at one of Scott's three weddings, all of which ended in divorce. Scott was a graduate of USC and a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He is survived by his son, Vernon Scott IV, grandson Oliver Scott, and daughter Ashley.

Sether, Wendell e-mail: nmasterson-at-earthlink.net    Editor    1930 - 1934
:From Men of Troy column 1934: "Chieftums" in the Daily Trojan office, Wendell Sether wields a poison pen as editor of the school rag. Blest with more nicknames and more secretaries than any other student executive, Wendell has taken the lead in many a campaign for university improvements. By-Liners, Blue Key, Knights, Sigma Sigma and Kappa Alphas are on his list of achievements as well as three years of work on the Daily Trojan before he became editor. Under his guidance, the university daily has taken a place as the best of college newspapers. Improvements in style, type, and make-up, plus a much fairer and more active part in campus affairs have been the results of his indefatigable efforts as chief of the editorial staff. Aside from his creating student interest in politics through his editorial column, his most noteworthy achievements have been professional-like reporting of legislative council meetings and his expose of the Blue Key elections, which resulted in that organizations being suspended until reforms are made. Following graduation, Wendell worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Herald-Express before joining the war effort as a news analyst for the Office of War Information in 1942. There he coordinated ABSIE, the American Broadcast System in Europe. After WWII, he had a successful career in the New York area in public relations for the National Board of Fire Underwriters, Newsweek, General Foods and McCall’s. He remained active with the USC Alumni Association, serving as president of the New York Chapter, interviewing students and raising money for the scholarship fund. For these efforts, USC honored him with the 1958 Alumni Service Award. He served as president of the Deadline Club, the NY Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi in 1963-4, and held posts in several other professional associations. He was editor of the Larchmont Yacht Club Main Sheet from 1970 to 1979.
"I recently learned of your website - Wendell Sether was my father and passed away in 1983. He was always proud of his editorship of the Daily Trojan," says Nancy Sether Masterson.
