1969 - 1971 Personal recollections
Returned from Vietnam as a Combat Photographer. He was an excellent photographer winning the "Gold Press Card Award" for 1970 for best photo story. Presently retired and living in Thousand Oaks, Ca. He says, "After leaving USC I worked at Camp Pendleton for a while directing and shooting productions, then went to Hawaii for 3 years and while there I was assigned to cover the Military pull out of Cambodia and Vietnam taking pictures of both operations. The most memorable part of that bit of combat was when they left me in the Landing Zone (a soccer field) and had to fly back to pick me up when they realized I was not on board any of the helicopters. That was scaaarry! I did receive the "Military News Film Award" for my coverage of the evacuation. In 1976 I returned to California and directed a few films for the Highway Patrol titled "Keep it 55 and stay alive". That was fun and nice to see my work on the TV each night. I worked at Camp Pendleton until 1980 when I retired from the Marine Corps. The Vietnam Memorial in Sacramento was copied from one of my Combat Photographs that I won an award for in 1969. In December of 1980 I started working with the Weapons Quality Engineering Center testing weapons and munitions, rockets and bombs. I did a lot of high speed photography of test in conjunction with testing the explosives and weapons. In 1985 I transfered to Point Mugu to do mainly Photogrpahy of the Navy Ship and Air launched Missiles until March 2001 when I retired from there ending 41 years 7 months of service to our country. I now live in Newbury Park, California where I make copies of Scottish swords for collectors and museums. I have also appeared in a few films as an extra. Presently I am trying to get an exhibit set up at USC of my combat photography and pictures of the battle sites and people in Vietnam today. I'm working with Ms. Sherry Moore, a Grad Student in the School of Fine Arts who will currate the exhibit. She is presently working on my display at the VA center in the Federal Building in Westwood, which will be an introduction to help get the exhibit at USC. Next March we will team up with another USC Graduate, Frank Lee also a Marine Corps Combat Photographer in Vietnam in 1967 to go to Vietnam to photograph the battle sites where we took combat pictures. There we will meet some North Vietnamese Photographers who were there the same time we were and include some of their pictures in the exhibit. In conjunction with this, a Canadian Producer wants to shoot a documentary on my experiences in combat and the USC exhibit will be a great lead in to the show and flaunt the best University in the USA. I will try to compare the combat photography with shooting USC football games."

Short, Garry
Fake Daily Bruin Co-Creator, Sports Editor
1957? - 1959? Personal recollections
Joe Jares points the finger at Garry Short as one of the instigators of the first faux daily Bruin. Garry hasn't gotten back to me with details yet -- spill the beans, Garry! Joe adds: "He was an excellent sports editor of the DT as well as co-editor of the first phony DB. He was a newsman in Orange County, then went into syndicate sales for many years. He lives in Newport Beach and does consulting work. He flies to St. Louis as often as possible to visit his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. (Son Steve also went to USC but didn't major in journalism.)"

Anthony scribes: "I left USC early to produce an online videogame and computer game magazine. In 1994 I started a dot-com. Not the best idea ever, but "Intelligent Gamer" was sold to Ziff-Davis in November, 1995. I left journalism in mid-96 and went into the game development business. (I became the story, what a journalism no-no!) Currently, I am the producer of an online wrestling game entitled "WWE With Authority!" for Genetic Anomalies/THQ." Was also a member of the USC Deckmasters.

Siegel, Eddie "Edward"
Chief Photographer
1990 - 1993
Following the glory that was USC, Eddie started trading stocks, bonds, derivative, currencies and pretty much anything that wasn't bolted down. Eddie started in New York, and also worked in London, Zurich and Hong Kong where he had a first-hand view of the handover to China: "It rained a lot." Leaving the world of trading behind, Eddie attended INSEAD (a business school outside of Paris) for a year and then joined Philips Electronics in Amsterdam. Working for their Mergers & Aquisitions / Corporate Venturing department, Eddie spent nearly 2 years in Amsterdam before being transferred to California in early 2002. After a year in California, Eddie moved to Korea for 6+ months for a work project, then returned to California for 6 months, then moved back to Korea for a time, etc. A lot of air miles, and a few worn out passports later, Eddie is theoretically living in Mountain View (near San Francisco), but continues to travel frequently.

Staff Writer, Editorial Director, Diversions Editor, Managing Editor, Design Director
1995 - 2000
"Just a quick update, I'm now living in beautiful Orem, Utah and working as the news/features designer for the Daily Herald in Provo. I don't have any current Web projects. And, in case anyone is wondering, Utah does have the best snow on earth. Unless you have to shovel it off your car at midnight. Then it's just annoying." Colin's early years at the DT took him to, then through, several editorial board positions finally landing at Design Director in fall 1998. After graduating USC in May, he discarded his Urban Planning degree and got a job as a designer at the Press-Telegram in Long Beach. He continued to volunteer at the Daily Trojan, writing a Style Guide.

Smith, Dan
Staff Writer, News Editor, Assistant City Editor, City Editor, Editor
1960 - 1964 Personal recollections
Smith, 1963-64 Daily Trojan editor, currently is director of regulator affairs for the Association of California Water Agencies, his employer for the past 28 years (!). He is married to journalism school graduate Hazel Smith (nee Browning). They live in Sacramento. He tells a fascinating story: "My first job after graduation was with UPI--whee I found myself at one point in Watts covering the 1965 Watts Riots. I spent an interesting, but tiring,18 months at UPI. Then I was hired by the Southern California Gas Co., where I worked for nearly seven years--I was a publication editor, a news bureau rep and, when I left in 1972, I was Publications Supervisor. I moved to Sacramento and worked in Public Information for the California Department of Commerce for about a year and a half, and then spent another year and a half trying to make a go of a PR/business development consulting business with another gentleman. When that did not work, I went to work in March 1975 for my present employer--the Association of California Water Agencies as Director of Public Affairs--PR work, publications, meeting planning, etc. In 1985 they decided I could be a lobbyist and I spent the next ten years trying to get the California Legislature to do sensible things--and now and then I was successful. In 1995 we decided we should also be lobbying various regulatory agencies and we established a Regulatory Affairs Department and I was named director--and I am still in that position. I've got good people working for me, so I have been able to take on special assignments that have been more challenging then anything else I have done. One of my special assignments was to help our members buy electricity in the deregulated electricity market. We probably had the first truly cost savings energy purchasing agreement and saved our members several million dollars before the energy crisis hit and the direct access market collapsed."

City Editor, Assistant City Editor, Staff Writer
1992? - 1996
Verbatim: "Let's see, the major change is that I don't go by Kim anymore -- my name got changed to Perri (don't ask; it's a long story involving email, the DT and Superman) just after graduation and almost no one calls me anything else anymore (except George when he's begging for me to send more Buffy tapes overseas). I've been living in Chicago as a graphic/web designer for three years, and doing some fairly lucrative freelance writing for the Sci-Fi Channel on the side. (No, I'm not using my expensive journalism degree in any way, shape or form, why do you ask?) When I'm not working or putting in heinous hours on the 8-some web pages I maintain (most of which I will never get paid for maintaining), I'm either a) writing the Great American Novel (okay, working on various stories that I will never get paid for either, damn it); b) traveling to sci-fi and media conventions and to visit various buds around the States; c) going back to Dallas to see the most beautiful and intelligent goddaughter on the face of the planet."

Tall, dark and handsome, Travis is the person who writes these descriptions. Travis is now co-owner of a Web development company called Hop Studios (as in, look at the address of this site). He had been working as editor of Variety.com, the award-winning Web site of a well-known entertainment trade newspaper. He moved to Vancouver, Canada, in 2004, but still owns a large pile of money, i.e. a house, in Pasadena, CA. Before Variety, he had a job with the Hungarian Internet startup Pressflex and before that was deputy editorial director of the Los Angeles Times Web site. He has also lived in France, taught at USC (online journalism courses) and spoken at various journalism conferences. He was married on May 18, 1996, to the luminous Susannah Gardner . For this misplaced Canadian, life is good.
