Soqui, Joseph "Joe"
Sports Editor
1995? - 1997?
Both Joseph Soqui and Melanie Reyes were working for papers in San Luis Obispo County along the central California coast for about a year and a half when they decided to dump the cage-lining business and move into education. Now they both teach elementary education. Vickie says "Soqui's a kindergarten teacher, how precious is that?!, and Melanie the 1st grade. Too cute for words, I'd say. As far as I know, they're still together and happy as ever." Got married in true DT relationship fashion in June 2002, and hatched a little Soqui boy in Nov. 2003. Congrats!

Stephanie Sortijas was working at the Louis Licari salon in Beverly Hills. Earlier (i.e. 1990s) I was told this, but couldn't verify it: "Pick up the Los Angeles Times -- she's a reporter for them, based in Montebello. She covers all kinds of stories, from politics to drive-by shootings."

Tanya totally unbundles: "I have worked at newspapers in California and New Mexico. I tried my hand at editing a couple of times but firmly believe that reporting is much more fun. Now I'm the statewide environment and natural resources reporter for the Albuquerque Journal. I've been here since 1996 and I mostly write about issues like water, endangered species and public lands, but I've also covered a pipeline explosion that killed an entire family, New Mexico's first execution in four decades, forest fires and other breaking news on and off my beat."

Kit Spalding was, perhaps is, working for a Florida law firm. The bio I dug up there says: "She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Ms. Spalding specialized ... in the areas of ..." workersÕ compensation, personal injury and Social Security disability matters.

1995 - 1997
So here is to dispel the previously posted "Honestly, I've got nothing..." -- After graduating in May 1999, moved to the Pacific Northwest to be an Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of Portland in Oregon. After a year and a half, got tired of the rain and took at job at Cal State Fullerton as Assistant Media Relations Director (can you spot the change in title?). Girlfriend of four years Kelly Pullin (also a DT alumna) followed faithfully and are now enjoying the southern California sunshine once again.

Bob Staake

Editorial Cartoonist
1977 - 1980
While at USC, did 5 cartoons a week for the Daily Trojan, caused his fair share of mayhem with fellow DT staffers (names withheld), and was single-handedly responsible for getting USC students to refer to Von Kleinschmidt Center as "VKC". See the http://www.bobstaake.com web site for the usual. Newspaper clients include The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, St.Louis Post-Dispatch, and others. Just finished his 26th book. Says he has "NO idea where all the time has flown. Seems like only yesterday we were haunting the halls of the DT, skipping classes, and engaging in youthful indiscretions. What a blast we all had. I think Mona was Mother Teresa in disguise for putting up with us."

George Stankow
|
Editor, Editorial Director, Chief Copy Editor, Columnist (Life In Detail)
1990 - 1994 Personal recollections
George has used shockingly little of his journalism degree and DT experience since graduation, choosing instead to serve in the U.S. Army. Since 2004, he has had a daughter, married another Army officer (hence the name change), been stationed on four continents, had fifteen or twenty distinct mailing addresses and somehow managed to obtain a Top Secret security clearance. He is currently stationed somewhere in New York area -- I'm a little foggy on my geography. He's does stints at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, and in Korea, and Germany, and still manages to prefer Taco Bell. Geo served as best man in the Smith-Gardner ceremony, and it was this editor's honor to return the service at his wedding.

(She currently just does ICE Magazine, the CD music news publication, and a teenage quarterly.) Stone, Larry
Art Director, Cartoonist (Dijon the Armadillo)
1989 - 1993
Married last June. Returned to Thailand for honeymoon. Settling into their first house. Larry took a full-time job as the web designer for eNature.com, which is owned by the National Wildlife Federation. (Watch out for the redesign, which should be implemented by the end of 2004.) Working in his spare (i.e. no) time on Dan Povenmire's Keep Left's site at http://keepleftmusic.com. Also teaching Photoshop and Illustrator at the Academy of Art College. Previous news: After a tour with the Peace Corps, Larry landed in New York in a job that involves staring at a CRT screen all day--the wonderful world of desktop publishing in the creative department at an educational book and software publisher. Check out Jordan Crane's zine, "Non" (http://www.beat.com/jordan/non). Larry and Eddie Siegel -- not a rumor, just as link. Also see Dan Povenmire, for no real reason, other than that he's funny to look at.
