Staff Writer
1989 - 1995
After graduating from the World's Greatest University around 1995, Jack was snatched up immediately for employment by the U.S. government to do God knows what. He's very secretive about his work and actually doesn't like it when anyone tries to initiate contact with him. He prefers to make the first contact, always. Jack is also a little sensitive about his weight, so be careful what you say about him if and when you do decide to e-mail the guy. Note: Walden's e-mail address has been invalidated for unknown reasons. He lives in Quantico, Va.

Warga, Wayne
Staff Writer
1956? - 1960?
"The late Wayne Warga (he died late April of 1994) should be added in the W section. PR major, class of 1960. President of the Trojan Knights, DT staffer. We in Sigma Delta Chi wouldn't let him in because he intended to go into PR. What a joke: he later worked for Life (covered the civil-rights marches in the South), the L.A. Times and the TV show "Entertainment Tonight." Wrote three mystery novels with a San Fernando Valley-based protagonist. One of first group to win School of Journalism alumni awards, along with Jack Jones (part of Pulitzer-winning L.A. Times team) and Al Wesson (author the USC alma mater, longtime USC sports publicist, studio publicist and Hollywood Park publicist -- gem of a guy). Wayne's novels: "Hardcover" (1985) (winner of Private Eye Writers of America Best First Novel), "Fatal Impressions" (1989), "Singapore Transfer" (1991). On of the book jackets sez: 'Wayne Warga was a correspondent for Life magazine in Cuba and Central America. He recently completed four and a half years as head writer on Entertainment Tonight. He is co-author with Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin of the best-selling Return to Earth, and with Lana Wood of Natalie: A Memoir by Her Sister, also a best seller. Mr. Warga lives in Sherman Oaks, California, where he collects first editions of modern books and contemporary art.' " sez Joe Jares. The dedication to to "The Last Detective" by Robert Crais: Top line: for Wayne Warga. Next three lines: who maintained his post under intense enemy fire and did not waiver even as he was overrun.

Washburn, Elizabeth "Liz"
Editor, Managing Editor, City Editor
1991 - 1994
Liz rose through the ranks of DT city to become an almighty yet benevolent editor whose iron rule was tempered by kindness. She was snatched up upon graduation by a paper in Thousand Oaks--the News Chronicle, to be specific--and then went on to the Ventura Star. Now she's hopped to the San Gabriel Valley Newspapers, where she was once upon a time the night city editor and in charge of the election night result charts. She married a bright fellow named Mark Smilor (he's actually a rocket scientist at Boeing) at a Colorado wedding in January of 1997, and in 2003, they added a son into their family. At some point in there, Liz moved to a house in northeast Pasadena that is charming and has a great barbeque used to have a spare room. Now she's a big shot Entertainment Editor at the SGVN and loving it.

Staff Writer

I received a tantalizing e-mail recently (Nov 1997) that went like this: "I have valuable, secret information about (list of 6 alumni expurgated for security reasons). I just don't have the motivation at the moment to write." Needless to say, I was intrigued. Mark later got in touch with me from an alternative account, after shaking off his Mafia pursuit, and I have more new alumni than I can shake a stick at (Stick Not Included). About Mark: He studied English and film, worked in interior design, got his Masters in Architecture, and is now working as director of marketing at the Manhattan House of Detention, while still teaching web design with Flash at Parsons School of Design night school.

Then, dabbled in sports talk in Ohio before going to Clinton, Iowa to cover Class-A baseball. Since February, 2000: Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Fort Myers (FL) Miracle, Advanced-A Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Wharton, David "Dave"
Staff Writer
1981 - 1982
David's feature on Trojan Elias Ayuso was one of the pieces picked for the The Best American Sports Writing book in 2000. Michael Lazarus reports that David works, or did work, for the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition, and also for the DT at some point. David provided a reliable second source, and adds that he, along with L.A. Times-ites Steve Padilla (city editor in the Valley edition), Hans Tesselaar (news editor in Valley/Ventura Sports), Stephanie Chavez (asst. Metro editor) and Mary Ann Hoffarth (editor in national), all met at the DT. Also Pauline Yoshihashi (Wall St. Journal) and Casey Wian (CNN) and Randy Johnson, a photographer, all of whom I'll be adding shortly.
Anyway, David started out as a news-side reporter for Herald Examiner before coming to the Times a few months after graduation in 1983. Worked Westside metro, took a year off, then became a feature writer in the Valley. He also received his Masters in Professional Writing at 'SC.

Staff Writer
1992 - 1993
After graduation, Christel got a job in Las Vegas (no, a newspaper job, but thanks for asking). I assume it was for the Las Vegas Sun, but I'm not sure. When the yoke chafed, she waited for her lease to expire working for a real estate PR firm. After that rumor placed her at GoldMine Software in Pacific Palisades, where she was the PR Coordinator. Then, and this I know is true, she was a PR Specialist for LowerMyBills.com. Currently, she's publicist for the Disney Channel.

Matt White

Sports Editor, Graphics Editor, Sports Columnist
1991 - 1994
Matt recently served our country in Afghanistan as a member of the Air Force Special Operations. While in his gear, high in the sky above Kabul, White found time read a copy of the Daily Trojan. If you don't believe it, I have a picture to prove it. Following his time in the Middle East, Matt came up to the DT to tell some interesting war stories. White writes: "I'm a USAF Pararescueman, which is a great job. Ask me about it if you want. I was active duty and spent about a year in Afghanistan, but more recently I've joined the Alaska National Guard. I'm in Anchorage, a FANTASTIC city, doing a lot of civilian search and rescue, and freelancing for the Anchorage Daily News." White is still in charge of the greatest Jim Healy website/sound archive known to man. (OK, well it's the only Jim Healy website/sound archive out there).

She's married, with house, kid, dog, cat, and still has an aura of cool that extends around her in every direction like that glow that Jesus had. Her new baby boy (Brendan, aka Niblet) is a charmer. K.T.'s and her other bundle of joy, her hubby Eric Rapp, have a house near Paramount Studios. The duet has a Saint Bernard slightly smaller than my Miata. A while ago, K.T. joined the Reserves and is off at a training course that involves lots and lots of pushups.

Wiley, Chris
Staff Writer, Columnist
1989 - 1990
Says one source: "I found Chris Wiley, Sports Reporter from the 1989-90 for the DT... Of course, he was one of our most talented writers at the time ... Wiley is working for Our Times in Westlake Village. I believe he's covering area sports for the publication. Good Luck!!!!!" A later message reported something completely different, namely, that he was writing for the San Bernardino Sun. So like any good journalist, I report both unverified bits of news, call it "balanced reporting" and let you sort it out. Manny de la Rosa saw Chris at Unity '99. Oh, and here's the final draft version of these rumors: "Chris is still working at the San Bernardino Sun, where he does a little bit of everything. He can usually be found at Avengers games talking with John Tamanaha about the good old days at Ron's bar.

Dmitri Williams
|
News Editor, Columnist (Random), Assorted other positions
1991 - 1993
Dmitri blurts: "I just got my first academic job, a tenure-track position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Chapaign. When not dodging tornados, I'll be teaching in the department of Speech Communication." He earlier proclaimed: "We welcomed our first baby last October [2002], Mia Ffion Williams. She's got her own page on my web site if anyone wants to see what a giant baby looks like." Congratulations! He's married (as of June 23, 2001) in L.A. to Cindy Canning, who has emerged from a longtime girlfriend-chrysalis into a beautiful wife-butterfly. Dmitri has finished a Ph.D. program in Communication Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Quote: "My research is on the economy and cultural effects of the mass media, specifically on corporate tampering with news divisions and on audience research. I've become a big old grad geek, and I've also unfortunately lost any semblance of a tan I might have had in So Cal. On the plus side, my darts game has improved and I get to watch lots of good artsy flicks at the campus theaters. I spent the 2000 New Year on a beach in Costa Rica with several friends (including Eddie Siegel), where we had a smashingly good time and once again pondered why it is I'm living in the snow. With any luck, I'll be done with coursework in a year and a half and I hope to head back to L.A. to do some hands-on research (and to get a tan). And then I hope to get a professorship somewhere with palm trees."
D. moved with his then-girlfriend to the University of Michigan to work on his Ph.D. at UM, Ann Arbor in Communication Studies. That's the Wolverines. He was working for USC admissions before that. He roomed with Jordan Crane for many a year in Venice Beach. He also got his masters in 1996 from USC.

Willman, Chris
Entertainment Editor, Assistant Entertainment Editor, Staff Writer
1982 - 1984
Gary Karr remains convinced that Chris Willman is a senior editor at Entertainment Weekly. Here's EW's bio of him (it's gotta be him, because Gary knows Chris wrote for the LAT after leaving 'SC). "Chris Willman has been a senior writer with Entertainment Weekly since 1995. His latest cover story for the magazine: a roundtable interview with Alicia Keys, India.Arie, and Nelly Furtado, the three major belles of this year's Grammy ball. Previous cover stories include profiles of the Dave Matthews Band, 'N Sync, U2, Aerosmith, and Jakob Dylan. Prior to joining EW, Willman wrote about music, movies and TV for the Los Angeles Times for 11 years, interviewing everyone from Sophia Loren and Kirk Douglas to Trent Reznor and Adam Sandler. Career highlights include writing liner notes for Steely Dan's boxed set and getting a long, nasty note from Phil Collins. You can occasionally find him representing EW on television, including an appearance on a two-and-a-half-year-old Alanis Morissette "Behind the Music" that, inexplicably, still seems to get rerun every other day. These are a few of his favorite things: The Beatles, the beatitudes, "The Band Wagon," "Bat Boy--The Musical," Elvis' Sun sessions, Elvis Costello, raspberries, the Raspberries, Albert Brooks, Busby Berkeley, bootlegs, "Out of the Past," "Twin Peaks," drive-in theaters, '70s car chase movies, alt-country, gurgling mountain streams, and winning the Grammy office pool." Willman also appears onGoldDerby.com as an expert pundit.

Wilson, Tracy
Editor, Diversions Editor
1989 - 1993
Tracy's on marternity leave. What can be inferred from this, I leave as an exercise to the reader. In 2000, she was married at a winery in Santa Barbara County. Her hubby was a fellow staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, Fred Alvarez. He's an agriculture, labor issues and general social issues reporter. Tracy's still covering courts for the Ventura County Edition. Fred has a 10-year-old daughter, who lives with them part-time -- they share a small house in Ventura with three cats and one 100-pound Rhodesian ridgeback (that's a dog). Honeymoon was in romantic Tuscany, Italy, where they frolicked amid cardinal-colored wine and gold fall grape leaves. Tracy got her master's from USC.

Wilson, Yumi
Staff Writer
1987 - 1988
After stints in the Oakland and the Sacramento bureaus of the S.F. Chronicle, plus some time on the L.A. AP news desk, Yumi returned to S.F. (in 1993) to be a general assignment reporter at the newspaper. She became a city hall reporter for the Chronicle, and then Open Forum editor, and now Deputy Readers' Representative. She writes to say she will be going to Japan for three months on a Fulbright Research Grant, having just returned from an eight-month fellowship at the University of Michigan as a Journalism Fellow. "Fellow" -- that always cracks me up, same as the word "guy wire". She's also teaching news writing at San Francisco State University.

Winchell, Bryan
Staff Writer
1992 - 1994
Update for January 2003: These days, we find Sir Winchell enjoying himself immensely while working at a hip used bookstore in beautiful Tacoma, WA. Sure, it rains here a lot, but that just gives Mr. Winchell more time to read. However, after meeting a wonderful woman from Japan last winter, Winchell is spending much of his free time studying Japanese so he can go to Japan (probably next year) to teach English and very possibly tie the knot. Banzai! Since incarnating as a freelance sportswriter and agate editor at the L.A. Daily News, Sir Winchell has been on an extensive, roundabout journey to the top of the alternative newspaper world. He was working as an associate editor of the Tacoma Reporter, a small alt-weekly, covering such hot topics as lying county auditors, dishonest judges and why, if the world were to end, it would start in Pierce County, which challenges Cook County in Illinois for the title of "America's most corrupt county." When he's not hot on the trail of some whacked-out conspiracy theorist, Winchell entertains himself by traveling around the United States seeing various musical acts like Phish and writing about it for www.jambands.com. He tries to keep a steady head through all of this, but as in college, Winchell sometimes frequents the dark room for a needed break.

Troy Witt
|
Photo Editor, Photographer
1994 - 1998
Following graduation, Troy moved back down to Orange County where he now resides and continues to run Take One Productions, his photography and video production business. You can still find him on campus shooting since now the university is one of his biggest clients. He even drops in on the DT every so often to offer help to Mona and Ron. Troy joins the ranks of the 'married' in March 2004. He did some stringing photos for the Times Community Newspapers. In November 2000, Take One Productions was awarded an Aegis Award--a peer recognition in the independent video industry-- and a Communicator Award, for a 15-minute show that took Troy to China for 4 weeks.

Wolinsky, Leo
Staff Writer
1969 - 1971
Leo did all his journalism classes in one year, I guess to prepare himself for the fast pace of life as a centrifuge. Actually, Leo is now executive editor at the Los Angeles Times (he started there in 1977). He says that he did work for the Daily Trojan, but didn't rise very high, partly because he had an outside job at the county morgue that kept him busy.

Wolper, David
Unknown
1945? - 1948?
Last year, TV Guide singled Wolper out as one of 45 television pioneers, calling him "a true original whose vision and innovation shaped the medium." The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences agrees: in 1988, that distinguished body inducted Wolper into its Hall of Fame, alongside TV greats Red Skelton, David Brinkley and George Burns. Last spring, celebrating his 50th anniversary in entertainment, the 71-year-old Wolper handed over his entire personal and professional archive -- a vast collection of scripts, awards and business records -- to his alma mater. The new David L. Wolper Center for the Study of the Documentary, based in USC's Doheny Memorial Library, is an invaluable resource for School of Cinema-Television scholars. To date, he has produced nearly 800 projects, including 373 documentaries, 262 sit-com episodes, 20 feature films, 15 miniseries and 11 live spectaculars. Jeff Wong
|
Sports Editor, Assistant Sports Editor, Staff Writer
1992 - 1995
I thought Jeff's destiny was to work for Variety.com with me, but in June, 2001, he dropped a (figurative) bomb shell: "I'm outta here, kids. I ship out for U.S. Marine Corps officer training on early Saturday morning. I'll be back in L.A. in mid- to late-December, so I'll see many of you soon. Ten weeks ... 70 days. I'll be home in no time. I've been accepted into the fall class of Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va." Reporting in, he says: "I graduated from Officer Candidates School in mid-December, pinned on my second lieutenant's butter bars and returned home for three weeks of leave. I'm now back at The Basic School in Quantico, a place that reminds me of my freshman year at SC -- except for the live ammo and penchant for the color green. I can't believe I get paid for this." As of March 2003, Jeff was in Iraq somewhere and his unit had appeared several times on network news. He came back to the U.S. for the summer, and shipped out again to Afganistan (aka that other war), and has now been redeployed to Iraq. Jeff was previously working for Shine.com, a charity news site. He was before that with The Associated Press for four years until summer, 1999.

Wright, Moon-Yun
Staff Writer
1985 - 1989
After graduating from USC in 1989, Moon Yun returned home to Hawaii for a short while before moving to Paris, France for a 10-month work stint. She went back to Hawaii to work at a local newspaper as an editorial assistant where after a few months, she got offered her first reporting job in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Her French degree was useful in getting her that job as well as getting into the U.S. Peace Corps where she served as a Small Business Advisor in Mali, West Africa, a francophone country. Most recently, she's been writing freelance for newspapers and magazines mainly on film and entertainment. She's currently back home in Hawaii. Also, she did not get married, if people are wondering about the change in last name. She just went back to using her Korean family name.

I edit for a 'living,' had a play produced, owned a bookstore... now what? Maybe try again for a graduate degree and a career."

1997 - 1999
Jessica Wyland is studying photography in Santa Fe, New Mexico to supplement her journalism career. She plans to travel to Portugal and Japan in the next year to research, write and take photographs. She had been working for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group writing features about food and entertainment. She also wrote a Kids page column called "Ask Jessica." I don't condone old friends posing as children writing in with bizarre questions.
