This meme comes from Dog of the Future. It’s The Omnivore’s Hundred—100 foods that every gastronome should eat, according to “some guy named Andrew”. I actually disagree with a few items, but overall, it’s an interesting list, and the only omissions I see on it are shark and ceviche, and you might argue for dog. And what’s up with PB&J and pocky? I think gummy bears are more of a unique sensation than pocky…
I was asked recently what my top three goals in life currently were, and it triggered a fairly major stretch of pensive thought, which I’ve been circling back to on long drives, sitting idly on the grass in parks, and in conversations on- and off-line with stimulating folks. I spent last weekend car camping. It was the 2008 Scout Camp, only this time, we had 100% more women than normal, and 100% less snow. I can’t think how the two are related, but there you are. We were camping at Silver Tip campground, which is about 40 km South of Hope, close close close to the U.S. border.
Four leaf clovers and horse shoes and rabbits’ feet are considered lucky in Western culture, but that doesn’t come close to the way that people in China revere the lucky properties of the number “8.” I would not be surprised to hear of Chinese women inducing labor in a few weeks to have their baby born on the auspicious Aug 8, 2008, and I can guarantee that there will be a huge number of weddings that day.
“Let us face a pluralistic world in which there are no universal churches, no single remedy for all diseases, no one way to teach or write or sing, no magic diet, no world poets, and no chosen races, but only the wretched and wonderfully diversified human race.”
