Having a Vacation in Colorado

Today, I went dirt bike riding for the first time.

I didn’t die.

I did wear a bike helmet and running shoes instead of flip flops.

Setting Goals and the Raincity Grill

I bloviated recently about how to properly set goals, and a few people raised some questions—some might even say objections—to what I wrote.

So I went to dinner at Raincity Grill and thought it over some.

The Omnivore’s Hundred

This meme comes from Dog of the Future. It’s The Omnivore’s Hundred—100 foods that every gastronome should eat, according to “some guy named Andrew”. I actually disagree with a few items, but overall, it’s an interesting list, and the only omissions I see on it are shark and ceviche, and you might argue for dog. And what’s up with PB&J and pocky? I think gummy bears are more of a unique sensation than pocky…

How to Set Good Goals: An Essay

I was asked recently what my top three goals in life currently were, and it triggered a fairly major stretch of pensive thought, which I’ve been circling back to on long drives, sitting idly on the grass in parks, and in conversations on- and off-line with stimulating folks. I thought I’d better start by thinking about what the qualities of a good goal are.

World Ultimate Championships in Vancouver

I don’t want to wait until I have all sorts of flourishing words to post about the World Ultimate Championships, going on in Vancouver this week.  I’ve been volunteering as a scorekeeper, and it’s been inspirational, entertaining and relaxing.  I took a few photos to capture the spirit of the event.

Scout Camp 2008

I spent last weekend car camping.  It was the 2008 Scout Camp, only this time, we had 100% more women than normal, and 100% less snow.  I can’t think how the two are related, but there you are. We were camping at Silver Tip campground, which is about 40 km South of Hope, close close close to the U.S. border.

The luck of 08/08/08

Four leaf clovers and horse shoes and rabbits’ feet are considered lucky in Western culture, but that doesn’t come close to the way that people in China revere the lucky properties of the number “8.” I would not be surprised to hear of Chinese women inducing labor in a few weeks to have their baby born on the auspicious Aug 8, 2008, and I can guarantee that there will be a huge number of weddings that day.

Overheard

“Finding oneself was a misnomer; a self is not found but made.”

...who said it?

“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.”

...who said it?

“Subject: put on a happy face smile
Body: And don’t forget it. Happy wednesday! )”

...who said it?

“When I was a boy growing up in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing and as we sat there on the warmth of a summer afternoon we talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him I wanted to be a major league baseball player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he’d like to be president of the United States. Neither of us got our wish.”

...who said it?

“To lengthen thy life, lessen thy meals.”

...who said it?
