Some Things I've Noticed

I was sort of waiting for "Son of Variety Web site" to launch, but that hasn't happened. And in the mean time, there's been all these bits and pieces of life that I've been meaning to write about. Nothing quite so exciting as a paper cut, but you know, stuff.

I got a catalog in the mail a little while ago. It was a very expensive auction catalog, and it was FedEx-ed from Japan, with numerous Japanese antiques for sale, all significantly out of my price range. Susie and I have no idea why it was sent to us -- and the address was hand-written to us specifically.

I can't believe that Super Bowl game. Amazing! Remember that part where that guy threw the ball way down the field to that other guy, and the other guy almost caught it, but at the last minute missed? I think that other team should have picked up a foul for sure. That other team must be pretty bummed that they came this far and then lost to the first team with that guy leading them.... What?! OK, fine, I didn't watch the game, but that doesn't make me uncool, OK?

I recently switched to MCI. They offered me the unbelievable sum of a $250 gift certificate to Amazon.com to switch. I took the bait and ran with it -- bought a bunch of CDs just before Christmas. Well, MCI offers really good rates for most things except, oddly enough, to Canada. So instead of paying $0.07 per minute, with MCI I'm paying $0.78 per minute. And I asked them when I switched if I was on all the lowest rate plans, and they said yes. So I spent almost $170 extra on long distance to MCI, before I got the bill and realized and could switch back to AT&T. Now everything's right with the world again, and my $250 gift certificate only cost me $270.

I saw a rescue chopper come swooping down from the mountains above Pasadena today, and land on the hospital down the street. Probably a motorcycle accident -- they're pandemic on the 2, a scenic, beautiful, curvy highway that winds into the San Gabriels.

I can smell lasagna from where I'm sitting.

I went off-road biking for the first time ever last weekend -- drove across a river valley a few miles from our apartment. Kept expecting to run into aliens from the original Star Trek TV show -- the terrain had that "foreign planet that's really a national park" look to it.

I've been keeping herself busy with THE MOST ADDICTIVE WEB GAME I've seen in a long time. Move over, Tetris. The game's called Bejeweled, and and it's at http://zone.msn.com/bejeweled/ . DO NOT TRY THIS GAME.
