I went to the Highland Grounds Cafe again tonight to see Patti Rayne perform. She's a great singer, good songs, clever, nice voice, a crowd pleaser. She's definitely the best singer I've ever see who did not have a record deal -- and she's better than some that do.
Patti was performing at this cafe on the "Night of Bettys" where a number of singers get up and perform.
Patti's the best, but the other singers are all pretty good. In fact, they're all really good. Good enough that it's a little sad.
Sad that Britney Spears gets about 1.6 gazillion dollars just for getting out of bed in the morning, while all these talented and beautiful women are simply singing in a small restaurant south of Hollywood Blvd. on a Tuesday night.
I guess the thing that's also really sad is that these women really are trying to find the dream. They all say, in the patter between songs, that they're from some small town, that they have wanted to sing for years, that they're trying to find a regular gig, that they work a day job (or three). I'm not sad because they're suffering. Each one seems happy to be on stage, happy to be performing to an enthusiastic crowd.
I guess I'm sad because they can't all make it big.
