Auschwitz Album is the only surviving visual evidence of the process of mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The photos in the album show the entire process except for the killing itself. The purpose of the album is unclear.

And then, I entered and stood by a large table where I was supposed to fold clothing – dresses of women that were piled up. And we were supposed to work very fast. I was taught this work very quickly – fold ten dresses and tie them in nice bundles. And it all worked very quickly, like a factory. We had to learn very fast, since anybody who didn't work fast – it was no good…. Suddenly a girl hands me dress after dress, and I feel the smell of the dress, I look at the dress, I think this is my sister’s scent…. And I recognize my sister’s dresses, I recognize her perfume. I find two small packs with the names of her two boys – eight years old and six or seven or five years old – babies. And there is a name on each of the packs: Leipko Gobner, Haim Gobner and Esther-Hannale Gobner – three bags belonging to three little children with their names – small packs they had been given for the journey. And they were already empty. I opened them and identified the crumbs of cookies that I used to eat at my older sisters house. This was too much already, the dresses and the bags and this was a sign that they were no longer alive, and my brother-in-law asks where they are all the time. And then I must have collapsed.

My entry for Photo Friday: Blossom. It's a blooming tree in Central Park, New York, in the spring on a rainy day.
I got extremely wet that trip when I couldn't get a cab and so tried to take a "shortcut" across the park. That park is huge, and rain comes down much harder there than what I was used to in L.A.
