Quit the Army, Go to Bagdad, Pass Go, Collect $200

George, my friend and key player in many of my life’s stories, quit the army last month.  He’d been a lifer, but he got tired of certain aspects of army life COUGH*stupid hierarchies*COUGH and he’d been stationed at a recruiting center stateside for some time.

Curling Has Another Brush with Fame

It seems like only four years ago I was reading article after article about curling and its surprising popularity during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Many of my L.A. friends asked me about the rules and strategies of the game, me being the local representative and source of information about anything taking place near or on frozen water.

Most Popular Actress to Geeks

My friend George and I got to talking about who was the most popular actress among that portion of the population that prefer to live at addresses that are prime numbers, and name their cats after computer programs.  Yes, I’m talking about geeks.  So far, the contenders are…

Odds and Ends

I say that this is odds and ends, but really it’s a beginning.  I mean, I’m starting to write something.  That’s a beginning, no? I have so many loose ends in front of me right now.  Literally in front of me: Every angle of my vision is filled with another loose end.  In front of me: my digital camera.  I need a tripod for it.  I need to charge the battery.

No Rest for the Weary on Valentine’s Day

I wrote this on Valentine’s Day in 1994.  I’m very Happy that Susie’s my Valentine this year, and that she likes me even though I (used to be) a grump.

Grady Got Married And All I Got…

So I got back from the Northern Voice conference this evening, inspired to blog, but I don’t think I’ll talk about what everyone else is talking about.  Instead, I’m going to write about my friend Grady.  But I will share some photos from the conference.

Caterina’s Smart, but Google Talk/Gmail Integration Rocks

Background for those who are not class-A geeks: Google has an instant messenger service called Google Talk.  It isn’t a very popular chat service.  But Google just integrated it completely into its Gmail service so that a) you can chat and email from the same browser window, and b) it saves your entire chat history and makes it searchable.

In the Company of Strangers

Sore butt.  That’s what I have, because I got to this session too late to get a chair. This session that I’m at is “Archiving: ensuring long-term accessibility and usability of CMS content”—hey you in the back, quit nodding off, it’s interesting stuff!—at the Open Source Content Management Systems Summit, OSCMS (it should really be OSCMSS, guys!).

Overheard

“An unexamined life is not worth living.”

...who said it?

“BBFF (Best Bacon Friends Forever)”

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

...who said it?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

...who said it?

“Ever have something in your teeth that you cannot stop tonguing?”

...who said it?
