Hey, Guys, Chill Out

Boris and Darren both took the time today to whack matchstick.ca (those phone givers I just blogged about) with the “unsavvy” stick. Boris went so far as to say he’d “reconsider doing ANY business with Nokia in the future” because of gross infractions that led to them slapping a “spammer” label on Matchstick’s business practices.  What did Matchstick do?  Offer a free phone with no strings attached.  I say: Relax a bit, fellas!

Employee 3, Day 1

Today, I woke up with a new employee in my house. Matt Gardner, Susie’s brother, has joined us at Hop Studios.  He’s going to be a great addition to the company, I can already tell.  For instance, he brought a Nintendo Game Cube with him.

Do You Believe (I’m Interested) in Magic?

It’s a rainy summer day here in Vancouver, and looking out my window, it’s unlikely that my Ultimate game will be happening. This leaves me with a dilemma.  I can go see X-Men 3, or I can play Magic.  I didn’t say it was a BIG dilemma.

I Like Oscar Nominated Short Films

Sunday, I went to see a film presentation of all five Academy Award nominated short animated films, put on at the Vancouver International Film Center. I like short films for the same reason I like short stories. They’re not bound by the same rules as long-form novels and movies.

I Built a Sand Castle

On my recent trip to North Carolina, Matt and I built a sand castle.

It started small (1 grain) and we built up from there.

By the end, I estimate it weighed about 800 pounds, maybe more.

My Sister’s Birthday

My sister Virginia turned 23 this weekend, and she pissed and moaned because she was now almost out of her early twenties, and she feels old and yadda yadda yadda. Clearly, she is completely insane, because mid-twenties was only “old” when *I* was turning 24.  Now I am in my thirties, and the scales have fallen from my eyes and I can see that mid-twenties is the prime of life when all is honey and wine and fresh strawberries.

Today, i went to an league-wide skills clinic and BBQ for the Vancouver Ultimate League. The thing I like best about the sport, as I said to Laura…

Overheard

“We were addicted to the intensity of our hunger—the almost limitless depths of it—and to the certitude that we were needed, that we were vital.  Such a feeling is not as wonderful as the condition of being loved, but it is similar, with its dependencies, and far more reliable.”

...who said it?

“When authorities warn you of the sinfulness of sex, there is an important lesson to be learned. Do not have sex with the authorities.”

...who said it?

“From the backstabbing co-worker to the meddling sister-in-law, you are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life.”

...who said it?

“Don’t let your victories go to your head, or your failures go to your heart”

...who said it?

: “If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway.”

...who said it?
