Scout Camp 2008

I spent last weekend car camping.  It was the 2008 Scout Camp, only this time, we had 100% more women than normal, and 100% less snow.  I can’t think how the two are related, but there you are. We were camping at Silver Tip campground, which is about 40 km South of Hope, close close close to the U.S. border.

The luck of 08/08/08

Four leaf clovers and horse shoes and rabbits’ feet are considered lucky in Western culture, but that doesn’t come close to the way that people in China revere the lucky properties of the number “8.” I would not be surprised to hear of Chinese women inducing labor in a few weeks to have their baby born on the auspicious Aug 8, 2008, and I can guarantee that there will be a huge number of weddings that day.

Our New House near Oak and 25th

So, we got a new place.  Yay!

We actually signed the papers a little over a week ago, but I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had a chance to blog about it.  I have, however, had a chance to answer a LOT of questions about it, so here’s the deets:

What Single Thing Do You Do Best?

Matt asked me today: What do you think you do best?

Not better than anyone else in the world—you don’t have to be better than everything else.  But if you had to identify a particular skill or attribute—and you do, because that’s what I’m asking—that was your best skill, what would it be?

How Travis finally got himself an iPhone

I was awoken this morning at 6:50 a.m. by a call from my friend, Degan.  She was heading to a 7 a.m. meeting, but was calling me to get me out of bed so I could head to my own important appointment.  I have to thank her, for a “mere” 9 hours later, that call resulted in my purchase of a brand new iPhone! (By the way, Rogers totally blew this launch.)

Toilet Paper Usage: The Toilet Poll

This is a question I’ve been wondering for a long time, and was finally prompted to do it by having to look up blog polling software for a client.  On average, at home, how many times do you pull toilet paper off the roll to wipe in each session (Number 2)? And on average, at home, how many squares of toilet paper do you use at one time (i.e. all attached together)?

List of English Question Words

I spent some time looking for a complete list of English question words, that is, words that start questions.  I couldn’t find one, so I decided to make one.  There are 14 question words (aka interrogative words) in English. Here it is, with definitions: Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, Which, Wherefore, Whatever, Whom, Whose, Wherewith, Whither, Whence

Happy Canada Day!

I’m going to a BBQ.  Nothing says Canada Day like smoked meat tubes.  (Also, everyday is Canada Day for me.)

Overheard

“Work saves us from three great evils: boredom, vice and need.”

...who said it?

“A third of high school graduates, along with 42 percent of college graduates, never read a book after they finish school. Eighty percent of the families in the United States last year did not buy a book.”

...who said it?

“All things are difficult before they are easy.”

...who said it?

“All growth is, by its very definition, not sustainable.”

...who said it?

“We’re Justin and Dave, and this is our improbably, bacon-flavored story...”

...who said it?
