Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Big news in a short letter:

First of all, I have a new e-mail address.  I sold my domain, HOP.com, and now can be contacted at HOPSTUDIOS.com. So that’s

and

(The brackets and the upper case letters are optional.)

So, my web page has moved as well to:

Susie is at:

That means the Daily Trojan Alumni Link has also moved:

It’s up to 230 people listed; if you haven’t written me recently to let me know what’s new with you, please do so. (DTLink.com was already taken, by the way)

Second, I’m working for a new company, a web startup.  I’ll be spending 6 months of the year in Budapest, Hungary, starting in August, and 6 months of the year in Los Angeles, working remotely. I’ve already started from here from Paris.

It’s a job that uses all the skills I’ve collected: journalism, programming, languages, and obsessing about interface design.  I’ll also get a chance to work with some of the new technology that everyone’s talking about, but no one is using.  I’ll tell you more about the company soon, but for now, we’re keeping it hush hush.

Third, Susie has a new job.  She’s going in August to work at USC as a multimedia professor.  She’ll also be writing a regular column for the Online Journalism Review.  The details of the courses have yet to be worked out, but it’s a great move for Susie (and the USC journalism program), in my opinion. She might be back in time for SIGGRAPH.

This means that, for a few months of the year, Susie and I will be racking up huge phone bills.  But it also means we’ll split time between the U.S. and Europe, which I think it fairly neat.

From now until August, we have a pretty insane schedule, working, traveling, having friends visit, packing, working some more, and eating baguettes.  Mmm, baguettes.

As always, you can contact us at

+33 (0)1 40 38 47 93

From the U.S. it’s:

In Paris, it’s:

will reach us somewhere, someday.

I plan to write another very long e-mail with all the latest details of what I’ve been up to.  If you’d rather not receive that, let me know. I won’t be sending it to _everyone_ who gets this e-mail, in any case.

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”

...who said it?
