Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Susie and I are getting ready to celebrate our tenth anniversary.  We’re at T-30 days.  We’re (surprise surprise) actually going to be in airports traveling on the actual day, but we plan to take a little holiday before or after our chronological anniversary, just the two of us somewhere within driving distance but far enough away to feel like a real escape.

As is often the case, we have put off planning, and we’re just now starting to look at our options.

At Easter dinner last night with my cousin Bill’s (ham, scalloped potatoes, brussel sprouts, raspberry rhubarb pie, shiraz), they suggested we head to Tofino, and, while that sounds really excellent, I wanted to get a second opinion from Bloglandia.  Oh, and blue cheese, we also had blue cheese and pâté as an appetizer.  Man, I never really like blue cheese but I thought maybe my taste buds had matured or changed or something, so I tried another little morsel last night.  It’s a good thing they were out of the room checking on the ham, because I looked like I’d just been French kissed by a goat.  The taste of blue cheese reminds me very strongly of the taste of old paint, the taste you get in your mouth when you’re doing renovations to an abandoned building.  It makes me wish I was wearing a particle filter mask.

Anyway if you have any advice for things to do, places to stay, and so forth while we’re there, that’d be swell.  Or if you have other ideas for how to celebrate ten years of riding the same trail with your saddle partner, let us have ‘em.

Tofino is awesome. The highly priced Wickanninnininish or whatever it is called is very luxurious, but there are lots of other fun places.

My family has been going to the Ocean Village resort for many years -- little beehive huts, you can buy crab from the crab guy, walk on the beach, etc. etc.

Rent some wetsuits and go boogie-boarding.

If you've never been, definitely a worthwhile trip.

Dude,
Did we not tell you that Tofino would be the most awesome place for a romantic getaway for you two sometime?
Noriko and I had a fantastic time there this summer and wholeheartedly recommend The Middle Beach Lodge <http://www.middlebeach.com>. They have two different buildings separated by a couple-minute walk, and we stayed at the quieter, more secluded of the two - "At The Beach".
Boris is right, there are a lot of fun things to do around Tofino, but I think we had the most fun just mucking around on the beach (about 1km of private beach in front of this place) in the rubber boots they have on hand for guest use.
Anyway, YES, GO THERE!
