Unpacking

OK, so let me start by saying that Susie and I have been trying for the past two months to get rid of things from our house, to simplify our lives, to unburden ourselves.

That said, it’s always nice to get a present, and I’m as stuff-happy as the next guy.

Here then, is my list.

  • What I’ve liked before and would like most of all is a donation made in my name to the charity of your choice.  Really, that’s the best present I could ask for.  This year, a political donation would also be appreciated, and yes, to whatever political party you support.  If you don’t support a political party, well, go find one that matches your beliefs, and then support it, because that’s how you can ensure the country won’t keep going to hell in a handbasket.

  • Gift certificates to restaurants take up very little space, are great fun to use, and the only accumulation they contribute to is my waistline.  Some of my favorite restaurants:
  • Houston’s http://www.houstons.com/
  • El Tepeyac http://www.digitalcity.com/losangeles/entertainment/venue.dci?vid=9160
  • Sushi of Naples http://www.sushiofnaples.com/
  • Pink’s http://www.pinkshollywood.com/
  • The Hat http://www.thehat.com/
  • The Curry House http://www.house-foods.com/curry_house.html
  • Yoshida http://chefmoz.org/United_States/CA/San_Marino/Sushi_Bar_Yoshida952391655.html

  • My Amazon Wish List has a number of items; I’m really more into music now than books, because I have more time to listen to music that read a book, and it’s also smaller. http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/registry.html/?id=12VQAHF6E8UDZ
  • I need a new pair of Gap pants, tan.
  • There’s always the Beef Jerky of the Month Club http://www.jerky-of-the-month.com/info.html

  • I hope that, if you were planning to get something for me, this list helps; if you have already gotten something for me, you realize that I’m amazed at your forethought and thoughtfulness; and if you weren’t going to get me anything, this list is in no way meant as a goad or a prod, just as a guide and a prop.

    Overheard

“The superior man contains the means in his own person. He bides his time and then acts. Why then should not everything go well? He acts and is free. Therefore all he has to do is to go forth, and he takes his quarry. This is how a man fares who acts after he has ready the means.”

    ...who said it?

“Greatness is only a matter of will.  It is the end result of patience, determination, direction and strength.”

    ...who said it?

“kindergarchy n. Rule or domination by children; the belief that children’s needs and preferences take precedence over those of their parents or other adults.”

    ...who said it?

“The Northeast Blackout affected 50 million people and zero PEER 1 customers. Find out why.”

    ...who said it?

“As in 2007, the average U.S. worker has 14 vacation days this year. Just across the Canadian border, our counterparts get an average of 17 vacation days annually. But if you want a real “vacation envy” complex, consider the vacation banks of European workers. France tops the list with an average of 37 days, followed by Italy (33 days), Spain (31), the Netherlands and Austria (28), Germany (27) and Great Britain (26). “
