Yep, I’ve finally, finally launched my new blog design.
So, let me know what you think of the new place. Click around. Dive in. Tell me what you like and don’t like. And tell your friends, too!
I’ve called it “Unvarnished” because I’m very conscious of the business-ization of blogs, and this place isn’t going to be that. For business blogging, Susie and I have Hop Studios. This place is for the personal stuff, and I make no bones about that.
Why did it take so DANG long to upgrade the site? Well, I switched the entire underlying software (from Movable Type to Expression Engine, mostly because of the spam problem). Second, the design was done by the sensational Matt Gardner, who gave me a design that pushed the boundaries of what you can do with blogs and CSS. There were times I hated him.... But look what he made me do!
And, for good measure I’ve also gone back through all the old archives making sure every entry was in good standing—there’s a lot of wonderful chestnuts in there.
I expect that this new site will work superbly in the browser I use, Camino 0.9a for Mac OS X, and maybe not as well in the browsers used by the other 99.8% of the world. (Hi, Mom!)
I’ve got a HUGE list of things to talk about that I’ve been building up since the site revamp started. I’m currently eyes-deep in a separate huge project, which I will announce here shortly. In the mean time, I’ll see what I can do to at least start on the sludge pile.
Thanks for your patience, and jump on over to the comments!
“The superior man contains the means in his own person. He bides his time and then acts. Why then should not everything go well? He acts and is free. Therefore all he has to do is to go forth, and he takes his quarry. This is how a man fares who acts after he has ready the means.”
“kindergarchy n. Rule or domination by children; the belief that children’s needs and preferences take precedence over those of their parents or other adults.”
“As in 2007, the average U.S. worker has 14 vacation days this year. Just across the Canadian border, our counterparts get an average of 17 vacation days annually. But if you want a real “vacation envy” complex, consider the vacation banks of European workers. France tops the list with an average of 37 days, followed by Italy (33 days), Spain (31), the Netherlands and Austria (28), Germany (27) and Great Britain (26). “
Err...is it your intention to make a really, really wide page? If so, well done. If not, you might want to give http://browsershots.org/ a try there. Otherwise, it looks great.
I see you share my affection for lesbian singer-songwriters.
You can scroll right easily by holding down the SHIFT key and using your scroll wheel. (Firefox users trying this will end up jumping to old Web pages until a) Firefox releases a fix, b) they change their settings like so.)
