Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

From my mom:

Hi son,
thanks for calling so quickly about the furnace.

It was all about trying to change the filter, and the furnace was on and it suddenly went ‘whoosh’ and then there was this burning smell in the house etc. etc.  I called the gas company emergency (after you of course, sorry...) and they walked me through turning the furnace way down so it was off and then changing the very dirty filter and also asked if I had pets, (’yes’), and then suggested the burning smell was burning dust and cat hair and after I got up the courage to peek into the basement storeroom to see if the furnace had burst into flames and it hadn’t I decided I didn’t need to leave and wait it out at Keren’s and in fact it’s now above 15 degrees Celcius in here for the first time in days so it was all worth it.

thanks again for calling so quickly.

And you see, that’s why I’m much more worried about my cats Aimee and Lukaska than I am about muggings or earthquakes.  They’re sneaky dangers!!

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”
