My Knee Was Operated On

So, I’m headed in for knee surgery on Friday, out at the UBC Hospital. Any last minute advice??

Dr. Chin is going to repair my torn ACL (left leg) and maybe fix a meniscus or some such while he’s in there, plus plant the government chip and the cyborg parts.  It’s a day surgery; I should be home again by nightfall well before the zombies re-surface.

I’m completely not nervous, and won’t be until about a day ahead.  I am nervous about AFTER surgery—the weeks and months of physiotherapy and the cost involved and oh, the pain, did I mention I’m a big pain baby?

Susie and Laura will take good care of me while I’m a limpy gimp. I plan to work from the couch, and I hope to be up and crutching just ASAP.  Some people come back even stronger than before surgery, I’m told, though that could also simply be that people tend to get stronger when they focus on improving themselves physically.

Me, I’m just hoping for fewer incidents of sharp eye-watering pain, and the ability to enjoy recreational Ultimate multiple nights a week. I’ve missed playing so, so much. It really has become a part of what keeps me balanced, and I’ve been off-balance for some time now.

It amazes me how many people seem to have had ACL problems; their stories and advice have been really helpful. Of course, a bit of of it was contradictory; the stuff that wasn’t was what I relied on.  I am not, for instance, getting a cadaver’s tendon to replace what I have; I am getting my own hamstring removed to be used to repair the ACL.

In the mean time, I’m going to bed down with a lot of TV, whatever painkillers I can get prescribed, and ice packs galore.  Wish me luck!

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”

...who said it?
