Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

I went to a Canadians baseball game tonight.

It wasn’t just a Canadian baseball game—the team is called the Canadians.  Like Vancouver’s hockey team is called the Canucks.  How the heck did Vancouver get the right to call itself by the country’s name? There’s no team in the U.S. called “Americans”—hmmmm?

Of course, Montreal’s also got the Canadiens—as if they don’t piss off the rest of Canada enough already. And that reminds me.  Why do Canadian teams all have such unoriginal names?  Like the Roughriders and the Rough Riders.  What, that was the only good noun?  There was a sale on leftover jerseys? What?

The game was in honor of Mike, who’s leaving Vancouver to head for Victoria.  I’ve given him our moving boxes, and a recommendation for Abart Moving—but I don’t want him to go.  I was just starting to get to know him.  It’s only been 20 years, and I’ve got 80 years left to hang out.  But he might be back.  Maybe.  Just maybe.

As for the game—the Canadians beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in a 5-3 undramatic competition.  Meanwhile, the stadium ran out of chili, hot dogs, corn dogs, and the mini donut stand was only open for 5 innings, and could have sold twice the donuts if they’d just been able to produce them faster.

Things have not been smooth at the mini donut stand since the fire several years ago (and one might argue they probably were so smooth before the fire, either.)

By the way, I spent some time looking for information about a fire in the mini donut stand, but couldn’t find any.  Did my friends make this up, or did it happen?

All in all, a great time was had.  I hope to go back and take more photos.

Overheard

“BBFF (Best Bacon Friends Forever)”

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

...who said it?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

...who said it?

“Ever have something in your teeth that you cannot stop tonguing?”

...who said it?

“ . . . the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan’s advantage.”

The park's in a gorgeous location, isn't it?

As for your point on "Canucks" and "Canadians", there's always the New York Yankees. And, in fact, there's an AHL team (the best North American pro league after the NHL) called the Rochester Americans.

Well, 'Yankee' is used as a generic term for 'American' now, but the word started as, and also still is, a term for people from a particular region of the United States. Actually, I think those are probably the best team names, for a team to be named to match the region they're in (when the region is not the whole damn country).

But yeah, Rochester Americans is super lame.

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay was the top vote-getter for last night's MLB All-Star game.

He's from some small town in BC.

When local sportwriters asked him if his election to the ALl-Star team would get play in his hometown, he said, "I'm sure it will be on the news, but probably after a hockey segment."

I'm touched!

I have to say, I think 60 years is probably a better estimate. The time is now, buddy!

Let's make another date. I already have a couple of times I know I'll be back in Vancouver in August.

Thanks for the boxes, BTW.

Don't use Abart Moving! We just used them and they broke our very expensive furniture piece after not securing it properly. They refused to use their insurance (if they have any) and bullied my husband into paying for all but $75. (Try arguing with two big movers on your own.) DO NOT USE ABART MOVING! I beg you! I had used them three previous times, but this was ridiculous. They actually insulted the furniture piece, which is worth $2500, by saying it was cheap and from Ikea. It's not cheap or from Ikea, and that's beside the point!
