Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

With Spring finally here, the outdoors has become ‘real’ again.  So I’m interested in playing Ultimate this season.

Yesterday was the first day of registration for individuals, near as I can tell from the site, which is reather nicely constructed techncially, but fails to answer my basic questions, such as, where are the fields, what does a beginner need to know, how do I get put on a team, etc. etc.

So, I’m taking it to the Internet.  If anyone has a team that I’d fit in on, please let me know how to go about joining it.  Help!

As far as being a player: I used to play a hell of a lot—several times a week, but never in a league.  I haven’t played for years and I’m fairly out of shape.  I am fairly persistant, and I’m totally good at giving the evil eye to other team when necessary.  I also promise not to pee in the bushes; I’m not just bringing that up for no reason: I understand this has been a bit of an issue at some fields last year.

So, let me know if your team has an opening, and plays on Monday, Tuesday or Thursdays.  Thanks!

Overheard

“Oh boy! Another great opportunity for personal growth!”

...who said it?

“I’m not bitter about what happened to me as a child, and my mother was instrumental in keeping me from being so. ... She taught me to be grateful for my life regardless of what that entailed, and that’s directly related to the image of Christ on the cross and the example of sacrifice that he gave us. What she taught me is that the deliverance God offers you from pain is not no pain—it’s that the pain is actually a gift. What’s the option? God doesn’t really give you another choice.”

...who said it?

After over a decade of user testing, it is clear that the way we search the web is similar to the way we would search our home for valuables as it was burning to the ground. Frantically.

...who said it?

“We must shift the focus of companies back to the customer and away from shareholder value ... The shift necessitates a fundamental change in our prevailing theory of the firm… The current theory holds that the singular goal of the corporation should be shareholder value maximization. Instead, companies should place customers at the center of the firm and focus on delighting them, while earning an acceptable return for shareholders.”

...who said it?

“We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.”

...who said it?

I've got a standing offer from a friend that plays on a very open and beginner friendly team...I'll email her and get the details again.

My friend Eric Baron is the captain of the East Van Halen team, and they play on Thursday evenings. They're very open and beginer friendly too.

I want Travis to get a team, so that I can sub for it or play along side him in all our mediocre glory.

East Van Halen may not qualify as entirely beginners, but they're certainly not expert. I see they finished 5-3 in Div 6 (of seven divisions) last summer. Plus, they wear gnarly black rock t-shirts.

Dude, you're listening to a Jefferson Starship retrospective? Couldn't you at least listen to Jefferson Airplane?

Both offers sound nice. Please let me know how to get in touch with the team captains or whatever I need to do next...

A friend of mine's on 2 or 3 teams, at reportedly varied levels of intensity. I can put her in touch with you if you're still looking.

Thanks for the offer, Steena.

Unless things go badly wrong (and ha ha why would they) I think I'll be joining the Eat Van Halen team recommended by Rachael.

Oops, I mean the EAST Van Halen team. Sorry about the sudden flashback to that "Alive" movie.
