Last weekend, I went to a concert. I can say without exaggeration, it rocked.
It was called KROQ’s Inland Inavsion 2003, and it was a many-band event, with the two biggest being Duran Duran, and The Cure.
J and K, two good friends of ours, bought tickets for us, and we set out at about 2 p.m. on Saturday for an adventure of high school proportions.
We drove East, far far East, deep into area code 909 where the Hyundai Amphitheater sits nestled among the smog-draped hills. The temperature hit 100 just as we pulled into the parking field of eternal damnation (more on this later).
We had general seating, and taking blankets in hand, we trudged off to the gate.
Inside, the throngs surged from drink line to food line to bathroom and back again, with occasional stops on the large lawn in front of the tiny stage.
Well, perhaps not so tiny—we just happened to be sitting 1500 feet away.
We missed Bow Wow Wow, but caught the best band of the day, the Violent Femmes. They were so much more energetic than any other band there.
The concert ended, and we exited en a large masse. Our car was parked in a field with hundred, nay thousands, nay bazillions of other cars, and it took us TWO HOURS to get out of the parking lot. Unbelievable. Enough to almost ruin the whole occasion.
