I Can Get Sick

Earlier tonight, a friend called me up though it was quite late—it was about 12:20 a.m., in fact.

I’d emailed him early in the day to ask him a favor, and he returned the call saying, “I figured wouldn’t be waking you.” He was absolutely correct. It’s been a long time since a friend called me so late, and I have to say—I really enjoyed it.

It reminded me of high school when staying up late was actually more common among my friends than it seems to be now.  (Not that you’re all fuddy duddies, but, well, you might be.) Late night phone conversations feel entirely different than early evening ones.  The things that are said, the way people speak, the unlikeliness of interruption, all make late-night conversations so much more interesting and rewarding, I find.

Normally, only two people call me after 10 p.m.: my mom and my sister.  Both of them know we well enough to realize the chances that I’m asleep before midnight are about 1%.  They also have the same Smith gene that keeps them up all night.

I’m a later owl than they are, though.  I tend to go to bed between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., and get up between 10 a.m. and noon.  I’ve tried changing the schedule, but all that can do it is the promise of a breakfast meeting.

So if you’re up late, reading this, give me a call.  I promise to be up, alert, and full of interesting things to say.  And do me a favor: in the comment section, let me know what time is the latest I can call you.

Overheard

“The summer weather is expected to last well into next week.”

...who said it?

“Watch your step as you exit the train, and if you’re late, just remember that life is a lot like being on this train: we may not be there yet, but we’re getting there.”

...who said it?

“There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Please use in that order.”

...who said it?

“Description: MySQL server has gone away”

...who said it?

“According to Golf Digest, from 1996 to 2007, Woods made $769,440,709. Golf Digest predicts that, by 2010, Woods will become the world’s first athlete to pass one billion dollars in earnings.”
