Today, I went looking for fresh lychee fruit. It’s the season: they’re best in June in the Northern hemisphere. (They’re also available in December if you fly them in.)
I hunted with my friend Rob in several Hollywood groceries stores. Trader Joe’s had some, but they were a little sad looking and cost $3.99 / 12 oz. carton. Finally, we headed into Koreatown. Braving stores that smelled of pickled fish and fermented soy, we probably spent less time overall in the produce section than we did staring at the colorful, festive desserts and pastries that were, of course, completely inedible. Who makes snacks out of mung beans? Since when is shrimp paste an appropriate cake topping?
Anyway, we finally found the wonderful fruits at the Galleria market, at the much better price of $2.99 / 16 oz. And they’re perfectly ripened, too.

A) I know, I owe you a phone call... big time. I suck, what can I tell you?!
B) You gotta, gotta try -- unless you already have, and I'm preachin' to the choir -- the lychee ice cream at Fosselman's. AMAZING. Maria and I brought home a quart the other week and devoured it. Oh so good.
Fosselman's? Am I a rube for not knowing anything of this?

mmm... Fosselman's. In Alhambra. (Alhambra? Yup.) Homemade ice cream, about 60 or so varieties. Old fashioned scoop shop, but many modern flavors, including the lychee; taro; and something called "real vanilla" for the purists in the house.
