My good friend Julie has come up with a cool idea.

She’d like to be able to use a Web site that allows you to get walking directions from one place to another, instead of driving directions.

Currently, if you use MapQuest, it’ll tell you the best way for a car to get from point a to point b.  But with FootQuest, or whatever it’ll end up being called, a pedestrian might be able to cut across a park, go the wrong way up a one way street, take a foot bridge, or even head across a campus or a mall.  There’s no speed benefit to a pedestrian for following a major street instead of one a block off a major thoroughfare, and the air’s a lot cleaner when you’re not taking the route dominated by cars.

“MapQuest for Pedestrians” would, just by existing, prompt the thought in someone’s mind that, hey, I could go by foot.  And, it could encourage healthier habits, point out no-pedestrian zones and in general make it easier for the non-car-bound to get around.

I’m posting it here to set the idea free, in hopes that someone will build it, then she can use it.  Everyone wins!

p.s. There should be a bike map site, too.

Overheard

“BBFF (Best Bacon Friends Forever)”

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

...who said it?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

...who said it?

“Ever have something in your teeth that you cannot stop tonguing?”

...who said it?

“ . . . the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan’s advantage.”

...who said it?

My friend Anna came up with the bike route idea. Unfortunately I only have email as prior art, and now she will be jumping mad that someone actually thought the same thing raspberry

And, the routes should be user contributed. And it should probably include public transit info, too.

It could probably be built with Google Maps and magic. Let's get funding!

Here I am!

Great minds think alike--I too would like to see something like this. I'm positive there are tons of people that have thought of this idea, but it baffles me that it doesn’t exist. Mapquest and the like are pretty handy for car drivers, but directions using major highways and expressways don’t do much for anyone on a bike or on foot. You can find maps of paths for most major cities online, but they're crazy hard to make sense of. Check out this ridiculous map on Ottawa’s web site, for example: http://apps101.ottawa.ca/travelwise/map/english/cycling_map_e.asp. Not very user friendly.

Surely there must be someone working on something similar to this?

p.s. - I think it should be called Pathquest
