Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Turns out that me and my TiVo are going to be on Global National this Friday night (tonight) at 5:30.  Already, because of an on-the-air promo, an acquaintance has written me saying, essentially, “hey, wuz that you?” Yes, it wuz.

A reporter contacted me after finding my blog post about TiVo.  He’s doing a story about TiVo coming to Canada.

Now, one thing you should know about me is that, in front of a television camera, I’m like a leaky refrigerator—stiff, cold and damp.  I have a good friend who majored in broadcast journalism.  He asked me to help him on a class assignment once.  Once.

For my friend, I was supposed to interview a local university official while he produced the show.  He later told he that, though he received a decent grade, his professor had advised him to destroy the tape for my sake, which he did, which is why we’re such good friends.

Anyway, tune in tomorrow.  It should be more amusing for you than it was for me.  I will give you one outtake.  At one point, the reporter asked me, “Are you in love with TiVo?” and I said, “No, not really.” Susie poked her head out of her office and said, “But Travis, you’ve said that you love TiVo before,” and I said, “I do love TiVo, just not on national television.”

Oh, I should also point out that Boris and Alexandra are also going to be interviewed for the report.  Apparently, I’ve twice been named by new TiVo signups in Canada as the official “who did you hear about TiVo from?” person—Jen just joined the cult, too.

If you do decide to get a TiVo, please let them know you heard it from me by giving them my email address.  I get TiVo points.  Tell them my email address is TIVO-AT_HOPSTUDIOS.COM instead of my regular address.  I use that address to track spam.

Overheard

“The superior man contains the means in his own person. He bides his time and then acts. Why then should not everything go well? He acts and is free. Therefore all he has to do is to go forth, and he takes his quarry. This is how a man fares who acts after he has ready the means.”

...who said it?

“Greatness is only a matter of will.  It is the end result of patience, determination, direction and strength.”

...who said it?

“kindergarchy n. Rule or domination by children; the belief that children’s needs and preferences take precedence over those of their parents or other adults.”

...who said it?

“The Northeast Blackout affected 50 million people and zero PEER 1 customers. Find out why.”

...who said it?

“As in 2007, the average U.S. worker has 14 vacation days this year. Just across the Canadian border, our counterparts get an average of 17 vacation days annually. But if you want a real “vacation envy” complex, consider the vacation banks of European workers. France tops the list with an average of 37 days, followed by Italy (33 days), Spain (31), the Netherlands and Austria (28), Germany (27) and Great Britain (26). “

Yeah, I ended up on the cutting room floor. Though clips of my TiVo did make it in. That TiVo evolution startup screen, that was all me, baby.

I console myself by remembering that Kevin Costner was cut from The Big Chill.

You were edited out of that report like a commercial from a Tivo recording!

I guess "leaky refrigerator" wasn't what they were looking for wink
