Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

I came, I saw, I cringed.

It’s really not that good a movie.

BUT…

But, I didn’t expect it to be.  But, it offered something more: the audience participation was excellent.  People are saying that it’s the first “Internet”-enabled film.  That’s totally missing the point.  The more relevant point is that this was the first movie I’ve seen in ages where it was OK to talk back to the screen, to express yourself, talk to your friends, make jokes, etc.  When else do you get to do that?

I’ll tell you: watching at home, on the couch with your pals.  Some people spend tons of money to recreate the movie theater experience at home.  This was the first movie in ages that actually took the home theater experience to the big screen.  And I loved it. (Not just because I saw Julianna Margulies when she was in town filming it.)

I’ll go see any movie that encourages the audience to participate, have fun, get dresses up in snake-covered T-shirts with home-made wing sleeves.  That make the movie theater into THEATER, not just a big screening room.  There’s only a few movies that have done that recently.  The Star Wars films.  Batman Begins, to a certain extent.  Pirates II, to an extent.  Harry Potter.

So, Hollywood: craft more movies that let us play along, join in and participate.  Tell us when you market those films that you want certain films to be ours, to have fun with, to share.  Because most events are more fun when people get involved, when they feel connected, when they share the experience in and among themselves.

And that’s the motherfuckin’ truth.

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
