Kids Today, and What They Don’t Get

One of the things that’s neat about Eudora is that it has this little-known menu item called “Statistics”.  I had a look at it recently.  Because it’s the beginning of the year, it has a lot of stats that helped me get a sense of how much email I dealt with last year.  You might find some of these numbers unbelievable; I know I do. But they’re real.

The best statistic: Eudora says I’m nearing my 1,000,000th email received since 2001, which means I’m probably closer to 3,000,000, considering this doesn’t count any emails I received at the L.A. Times, at Variety, or previous to 2001. On the other hand, every year I get more spam, so pre-2001 emails are probably a fairly small percentage.

Received Email (this includes spam)
14,146 messages so far this year
403,463 messages last year
163,964 average per year
977,806 messages since 2001

Junk %
11,230 messages (78%) this year
254,682 messages (63%) last year

Messages read (this is a dubious number, because I do a lot of my reading via the preview pane, which Eudora doesn’t count)
3% of messages received this year
8% of messages received last year
    15% average
155,559 total messages in 6 years

Sent Email (these are not replies, they’re fresh starts)
  210 messages this year
  7,976 messages last year
  4,723 average per year
28,168 messages total

Replied to messages
  144 messages this year
  3,657 messages last year
  1,974 average per year
11,776 messages total

Eudora Usage
    12 hours this year
  361 hours last year
  284 average per year
  1,699 hours total

Statistics start time: Tuesday, January 23, 2001, 23:49
Current time: Thursday, January 11, 2007, 3:59

Overheard

“I swore with my hand on the Bible to uphold the Constitution. I didn’t swear with my hand on the Constitution to uphold the Bible.”

...who said it?

“Buy anything you want at the grocery store; cooking is always cheaper than eating out.”

...who said it?

“There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spending other people’s money and 2. Dismissing an idea.”

...who said it?

“Violence is a choice a man makes and he alone is responsible for it.”

...who said it?

“Oh boy! Another great opportunity for personal growth!”

...who said it?

It's interesting that you have almost double the number of fresh sends as you have of replies. My email usage pattern is the opposite: I have about double the number of replies as I have of fresh sends.
