Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

sushi at the Kings Hockey Game

I have three news items to share with you tonight—one’s big, the other two are small and serve only to delay the big news in a dramatic way.

First of all, I saw three coyotes while I was out for my walk tonight.  They were headed the other way just loping down the main street, Altadena Drive.  They crossed to avoid me, though—I must be pretty bad ass.

Second, I went to a hockey game tonight—Kings lost against the St. Louis Blues—and had sushi.  The fish was not bad, if a little pricey. I just love the idea of hockey sushi.  It’s like ordering B.B.Q. ribs at high tea.

Third, and I’m confident you will be able to determine which of these three is the big news I promised, is that I’ve given notice at Variety.com, and my last day will be March 26 or thereabouts.  I’ve finished being editor of Variety.com, and I’m going to become a full-time partner at Hop Studios with Susie.

I’m really, really happy about this, though I’m going to miss the great folks I worked with, and also a little nervous—people tell me that’s the way small business owners sometimes feel.  Even though Hop Studios has landed several great new clients recently, clients that made it possible for me to take this exciting step, who knows what clients the future will bring.

So if you or someone you can manipulate easily needs Internet consulting, Web site development, group or individual training, or online business planning assistance… well, you know where to send ‘em.

And while Hop Studios calendar looks to be quite busy right now, I also hope that I’ll get the chance to lead a more social, relaxed life with updates regularly to this column and even a little, as we say in Hollywood, “face time.”

Overheard

“BBFF (Best Bacon Friends Forever)”

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

...who said it?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

...who said it?

“Ever have something in your teeth that you cannot stop tonguing?”

...who said it?

“ . . . the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan’s advantage.”

...who said it?

I'm relatively certain I'm trading one craziness for another, but yes, let's!
