Four leaf clovers and horse shoes and rabbits’ feet are considered lucky in Western culture, but that doesn’t come close to the way that people in China revere the lucky properties of the number “8.”
It’s so considered lucky, that the Olympics are set to open on August 8, 2008, at 8:08:08 p.m. And a man in Chengdu sold his cell number, 8888-8888 for $270,000 dollars. I also know of a house nearby whose owner petitioned to have changed from 1816 to 1818, because that would increase the resale value considerably.
I would not be surprised to hear of Chinese women inducing labor in a few weeks to have their baby born on the auspicious Aug 8, 2008, and I can guarantee that there will be a huge number of weddings that day.
It’s considered luck because in Chinese, the number eight sounds similar to the word which means “prosper” or “wealth.” Which I think is as much of a stretch as the number six being erotic because it sounds like “sex.”
I plan to move on the 8th, and all I hope for is that nothing breaks or goes missing. Wish me luck!
“Everyday, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”
Did you know, the inverse or "unlucky" numbers are 4's. Remember our old Pasadena house? It was 444 Northcliff, so the owners, being the superstitious type changed it with the city to 446. Really messed with our mail delivery.....
PS: Sylvia's getting married on 8.8.8
I define comfort as self-acceptance. When we finally learn that self-care begins and ends with ourselves, we no longer demand sustenance and happiness from others.
It is not much for its beauty that makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
Before you do anything, think. If you do something to try and impress someone, to be loved, accepted or even to get someone's attention, stop and think. So many people are busy trying to create an image, they die in the process.
Is love supposed to last throughout all time, or is it like trains changing at random stops. If I loved her, how could I leave her? If I felt that way then, how come I don't feel anything now?
To do anything truly worth doing, I must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in with gusto and scramble through as well as I can.
To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.
