Leaving Things in Cars

I went to the Highland Grounds Cafe again tonight to see Patti Rayne perform.  She’s a great singer, good songs, clever, nice voice, a crowd pleaser.  She’s definitely the best singer I’ve ever see who did not have a record deal—and she’s better than some that do.

Patti was performing at this cafe on the “Night of Bettys” where a number of singers get up and perform.

Patti’s the best, but the other singers are all pretty good.  In fact, they’re all really good.  Good enough that it’s a little sad.

Sad that Britney Spears gets about 1.6 gazillion dollars just for getting out of bed in the morning, while all these talented and beautiful women are simply singing in a small restaurant south of Hollywood Blvd. on a Tuesday night.

I guess the thing that’s also really sad is that these women really are trying to find the dream.  They all say, in the patter between songs, that they’re from some small town, that they have wanted to sing for years, that they’re trying to find a regular gig, that they work a day job (or three).  I’m not sad because they’re suffering.  Each one seems happy to be on stage, happy to be performing to an enthusiastic crowd.

I guess I’m sad because they can’t all make it big.

Overheard

“BBFF (Best Bacon Friends Forever)”

...who said it?

“I find myself thinking of a checklist Wozniak wrote a few years ago describing how to become a genius. His advice was straightforward yet strangely terrible: You must clarify your goals, gain knowledge through spaced repetition, preserve health, work steadily, minimize stress, refuse interruption, and never resist sleep when tired. This should lead to radically improved intelligence and creativity. The only cost: turning your back on every convention of social life.”

...who said it?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.”

...who said it?

“Ever have something in your teeth that you cannot stop tonguing?”

...who said it?

“ . . . the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan’s advantage.”

...who said it?
