Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page
Tracker Pixel for Entry

Some guys I don’t know started a Web site called “Unvarnished”. It’s like a Yelp for reviewing people. But they didn’t buy this domain to go with their site’s name.  So if you are looking for Unvarnished.com, you will, not surprisingly, find this 9-year-old site instead of that other site.

Today, because of that other site’s publicity, “Unvarnished” is the #2 most searched term on Google.  My site has a sudden, shall we say, popularity.

To celebrate, I will be reviewing everyone on the Internet, starting today. Please leave your name if you’d like me to review you. I may not get to you right away, but unlike that other site, I do promise to say nice things about you. As long as you are, you know, nice or cute or both.

To the guy who runs that other site: I was at first a little disappointed to get 9,000% more traffic today than usual, not that it was shabby before—I do OK, you know.

But now that I do know why my site was cratering from heavy load, taking down me and all my clients, it’s kinda fun to have a big audience.  If I get a sitcom or talk show out of this, I’ll be sure to thank you profusely during my Emmy speech.

Overheard

“Oh boy! Another great opportunity for personal growth!”

...who said it?

“I’m not bitter about what happened to me as a child, and my mother was instrumental in keeping me from being so. ... She taught me to be grateful for my life regardless of what that entailed, and that’s directly related to the image of Christ on the cross and the example of sacrifice that he gave us. What she taught me is that the deliverance God offers you from pain is not no pain—it’s that the pain is actually a gift. What’s the option? God doesn’t really give you another choice.”

...who said it?

After over a decade of user testing, it is clear that the way we search the web is similar to the way we would search our home for valuables as it was burning to the ground. Frantically.

...who said it?

“We must shift the focus of companies back to the customer and away from shareholder value ... The shift necessitates a fundamental change in our prevailing theory of the firm… The current theory holds that the singular goal of the corporation should be shareholder value maximization. Instead, companies should place customers at the center of the firm and focus on delighting them, while earning an acceptable return for shareholders.”

...who said it?

“We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.”

...who said it?

I could not believe the premise of the 'get - unvarnished.com '. Yet another site that defies logic and will only degrade into a cesspool of vendetta oriented users. The only good thing about their marketing stupidity is the traffic it has brought here. And an aside to your poke about 'the conversation'...I thought I was the only one who was tired of everyone saying "listen to me" while I wait patiently for them to shut up and say something. Good luck with your blog's new found fame and I hope you don't waste the audience.

I got here by chance too and I just wanted to say great quotes and the horizontal scrolling is surprising and cool. (I wanted to leave a general comment about your blog rather than about one post but I couldn't.)

Thank you for using "TTFN" on the page prior to your blog. That is what my deployed husband says to me every day at the end of our chats before he heads out for the day. It gave my heart a good tweak. I hope you can make the best of your sudden fame! smile

I ws supposed to be posting my responses for my online classroom. Somehow I deviated and ended up watching the video that led me here. I love your layout. I will return at a later time. I need to go back to class. Cool site! P.S. Review me!

Haven't been to the other site - was on my way to take a peek and wound up here like everyone else.

Don't know how the wrong website address got publicized - My guess is that the right address was given, and then the rest happened because of a typo that got spread.

But it had a happy ending, because it lead to this nice site and a person who has the sense of humor and class to handle the sudden rush of publicity and just plain old funky internet weirdness!!

I like your site, even though it scrolls sideways.

Those people are so stupid for not making a decent offer for your domain before they rolled out their publicity campaign, because now you can demand big $$$. I'm thinking in the range of 2 to 3 million. Congrats to you man for winning the friggin' lottery.

I've never seen sideways comments before; Of course, I don't get out as much as I'd like. My Review: I really like your site. I have a home page I have never set up and I plan on stealing some of your layout and merely mentioning "thanks to Travis Smith" in some small script. I think you should run some Google ads for a few weeks. As for the rest of the Interwebs, well, it's OK so far but I'm pretty sure it's just a passing fad..
I'd love to be reviewed. Add me to your list.

Yes, I was curious about the 'nasty' site. but am glad I ended up here. the other is so wrong (not that I will bother taking a look now), but this site is SO right! I love the layout...

I must admit, I got here the same way many others recently did... my curiosity was piqued by that "other site" and I went to see what it was about. I somehow ended up here. I actually like the side-scrolling a lot more than I expected. Congrats on your sudden popularity. And sure, if you have the time, throw in a review for me too smile

If you're interviewing everyone on the internet, I'd better sign up now... You will be a very old man and still doing this... grin

Hey Mate,

Nice site you have going. I was very suprised to see the side scrollbar, I wasn't expecting it and couldn't find the comments at first, lol... Congrats on the goldmine (as stated before), it might not happen overnight, but it will happen. Mozilla had the same delima, they didn't own firefox.com, they owned getfirefox.com, now they own the other one as well... Again, congrats on the site, and the popularity will only continue to grow. It hit the Australian News this morning. Btw, I didn't know blogs liked being read. I wouldn't mind you profiling me either. Thanks grin

Love this site... it was a happy twist of fate since I was supposed to view that "other" site. The quotes are my favorite, although I have yet to get one correct!!

Hi,

Scrolling horizontally or vertically is your personal preference. But can't you make it a little more reader friendly - like putting clickable arrows on left and right end of the screen?

You can scroll right easily by holding down the SHIFT key and using your scroll wheel. (Firefox users trying this will end up jumping to old Web pages until a) Firefox releases a fix, b) they change their settings like so.)
