Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Susie and I have taken a big step towards becoming adults—we invited our familes to our place for Christmas.

This is both a brilliant and a potentially disastrous move.  Brilliant because it means we don’t have to travel, we get to see everyone on both sides, and we get to spend a little time off in our own city.

But there’s one big flaw in our plan—where are we going to put everyone? “Everyone” being a relative term, of course.  My twin sisters haven’t responded and probably will be spending Christmas with my Dad, leaving my Mom and Virginia as “maybe"s.  Susie’s brother and sister are fairly interested, though money’s an issue, and her parents haven’t committed yet.  But potentially we’ll need place for six people to sleep.

Right now, I’m thinking: 2 people in our bed.  2 people in the guest room.  Can the garage be made into a lovely home away from (or behind a) home?

Or perhaps one of the readers of this blog will be leaving their place in Vancouver around the Christmas holidays, and wouldn’t mind if Susie and I stayed there, or perhaps two or four of our family members.  Anyone got space available?

Or is there a bed and breakfast in the area that you recommend?

Overheard

“Oh boy! Another great opportunity for personal growth!”

...who said it?

“I’m not bitter about what happened to me as a child, and my mother was instrumental in keeping me from being so. ... She taught me to be grateful for my life regardless of what that entailed, and that’s directly related to the image of Christ on the cross and the example of sacrifice that he gave us. What she taught me is that the deliverance God offers you from pain is not no pain—it’s that the pain is actually a gift. What’s the option? God doesn’t really give you another choice.”

...who said it?

After over a decade of user testing, it is clear that the way we search the web is similar to the way we would search our home for valuables as it was burning to the ground. Frantically.

...who said it?

“We must shift the focus of companies back to the customer and away from shareholder value ... The shift necessitates a fundamental change in our prevailing theory of the firm… The current theory holds that the singular goal of the corporation should be shareholder value maximization. Instead, companies should place customers at the center of the firm and focus on delighting them, while earning an acceptable return for shareholders.”

...who said it?

“We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.”

...who said it?

There's an outside chance our apartment might be available. I won't be able to say for sure for a while, though, so that may disqualify me.

I have an air matress bed to lend you. I can also recommend a few good B and Bs in the area, though they tend to be pricey if they're close to the beach. I can't remember their names or I'd link / reference them here. But I can remember that they're just down the street from me and have signs out front telling me their names. So ask me if you're interested.

Thanks, guys.

I'm more interested in space than a mattress; I have two nice air matresses already.

The B&B option sounds great, if Darren's apartment isn't available.
