A Day of Derailed Plans

At breakfast today, I noticed a fellow with impeccable posture.

Posture isn’t something you notice often, except in its lack, or in excess. Like, across from me right now there’s a guy working on a laptop whose posture makes him seem far more like anorangutan than I think he’d like to know.

Anyway, this guy at breakfast, something about him caught my eye, and I watched him for about ten minutes, fascinated. His spine was like a ball-and-socket—he leaned back to sip his tea, forward to eat hisomelette , to the side to speak to the waiter. Never once did he actually curve his spine. He didn’t look uncomfortable or overly formal.

While Susie was doing her talk, I wandered around the MPH bookstore, and stumbled across a book that professed to give 98 non-verbal tips for better interpersonal communications. In my brief scan, several tips that I read seemed odd, and one was downright creepy (the epoxy eyes technique for attracting the opposite sex, if you’re wondering). But one good tip stood out: every time you walk through a doorway, straighten up, adjust your posture, and enter the room alert and upright.

Considering how many doorways I go through in a day, I think it’s a great way to enforce better posture, and also to assist me in making a better first (or new) impression. I’ll let you know how it goes.
