I spent Superbowl Sunday at a party. Lots of people, lots of alcohol. Some cheering, and a gasp of disbelief when Janet Jackson had half her shirt ripped off by Justin Timberlake. The camera cut away before he started to breast feed, thank god.
But even more memorable than the ending of the game, is the new drink recipe I was introduced to.
The creator was an elfin young woman, barely old enough to buy drinks herself, the girlfriend of Amy’s trumpet teacher. The couple had created the recipe themselves when they’d run out of orange juice one evening but had still had a powerful thirst. What they had left, was a bottle of amaretto and a bottle of grapefruit juice. Showing the instinctive genius and intuitive leaps necessary for great inventions, they decided “What the heck, let’s mix ‘em!”
The resulting drink, served over ice, is superb. It’s a hot-day, sitting-in-cool-shade, drink. There’s a hint of brewed tea, a touch of sweetness, tempered by the sour of something like grapefruit juice wrapped in a pillow. It’s also a lovely color, and the aftertaste is like a slice of fruit thank leaves your teeth feeling clean in a good way. It tastes the way the ideal Snapple should.
The drink was unnamed as of the party, and after consuming more than a few of them (we went through an entire bottle of amaretto, which normally takes about two years and five dinner parties), we decided to try to name it.
“Silverlake something” was quickly agreed on, because of where it was first poured for the masses.
“Silverlake Slammer?” I suggested. But that was deemed too negative: Sounds like something you use to get girls drunk on at a high school party. (And what’s wrong with that?)
“Silverlake Squeeze” came next, hinting at the citrus origins of the drink. But that name says very little about how the drink actually tastes.
Finally, a decision: “Silverlake Slip,” because it goes down so smooth it practically slips down your throat.
So, the official cocktail recipe:
Silverlake Slip
2 oz. Amaretto
grapefruit juice to fill
poured over ice, stirred
As with all cocktails, please don’t drink this one before applying for a job or attempting surgery on me.
(Final note: Amaretto is made by Disarrono, and their recipe page promises the drinks will “have your guest writhing in ecstasy!” which is the strongest marketing prose I think I’ve ever read. But their site seems to have internal problems, so the recipe page might not be there when you read this…)
